Thursday, March 9, 2006 with reports of CACKLING GOOSE, TUNDRA SWAN,
EURASIAN WIGEON, REDHEAD, COMMON EIDER, HARLEQUIN DUCK, TRI-COLORED
HERON, GLOSSY IBIS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, PURPLE
SANDPIPER, ICELAND GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, COMMON RAVEN, HORNED LARK, LAPLAND
LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, BREWER’S BLACKBIRD,
PINE SISKIN, an upcoming pelagic trip and seasonal and local reports
of interest.
Seven BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS (4 male and 3 female) continue in Salem
County, most recently reported Mar. 6. The birds are often in a mixed
blackbird flock near the farmhouse at the corner of Supawna and Freas
Roads (DeLorme P. 60, H-13). A CACKLING GOOSE continues as of Mar. 5
in a flock of SNOW GEESE often viewed from Mannington Marsh and
Pointer’s Auburn Road. Also at Mannington Marsh were 30 TUNDRA SWANS
and 800+ NORTHERN PINTAIL. Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS and ten SNOW
BUNTINGS were present on the south side of Rte. 40 near some puddles
and torn-up sod east of Pointers-Auburn Road while a 2nd year LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL was observed at the Lighthouse Road pond on the way
to Supawna Meadows NWR Mar 5
Florence Mar. 6 hosted an ICELAND GULL and five LESSER-BLACK-BACKED
GULLS, while an enormous number of gulls and waterfowl were noted at
Barnegat Light SP Mar. 5 including 75 COMMON EIDER, 40+ HARLEQUIN
DUCKS and many PURPLE SANDPIPERS.
Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR Mar. 5 featured a GOLDEN EAGLE and a dark
morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK both seen from the north dike as well as a
EURASIAN WIGEON.
The hen BARROW’S GOLDENEYE and the EURASIAN WIGEON continue at Sandy
Hook as of Mar. 8 with both birds observed off Guardian Park in the
bay. Other Sandy Hook sightings include 100+ SNOW BUNTINGS Mar. 8, a
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL Mar. 5, and an early group of seven flyover
GLOSSY IBIS Mar. 2, plus two MERLIN and all three scoters.
A PINE SISKIN visited a feeder in Locust Mar. 4 – 7, while a REDHEAD
was present on Lake Takanassee in Long Branch Mar. 8. An early
TRICOLORED HERON visited Island Beach SP Mar. 6, while the EURASIAN
WIGEON continues on Little Silver Lake in Point Pleasant as of Mar. 8.
A CACKLING GOOSE, four REDHEAD and several thousand SNOW GEESE were
noted at Merrill Creek Mar. 5 with two other CACKLING GEESE observed
at Assicong Marsh in Flemington Mar. 5. Oberly Road in Alpha hosted
8 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS Mar. 5 and 40+ HORNED LARKS Mar. 4. A
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was discovered in a large flock of blackbirds
along Stewartville Road near Merrill Creek Mar. 7 and a COMMON RAVEN
was observed along Rte. 523 in Lamington Mar. 7.
The pair of COMMON RAVENS continued their nesting activities at
Laurel Hill in the Hackensack Meadows in Secaucus as of Mar. 6 and
the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER is still present at Garret Mountain
Reservation Mar. 5.
The Sussex County dump hosted individual immature GLAUCOUS GULL and
ICELAND GULL Mar. 4, while the NORTHERN SHRIKE continues at Layton
Mar. 6. Look for the bird at the corner of Rtes 615 & 640 (DeLorme
P. 18, I-11).
