The first CALIFORNIA GULLS of the Spring season are being reported in the Calgary
birding area. The first birds were seen Sunday, March 5, at the Inglewood Bird
Sanctuary when the high count was 3 birds, but on Monday, March 6, 26 birds were
reported by Bob Storms at the Sanctuary. Also at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, but
on Thursday, March 9, Sid Andrews reported an AMERICAN CROW.

A NORTHERN PYGMY OWL was observed by members of a CFNS Field Trip to Shannon
Terrace in west Fish Creek PP on Wednesday, March 8. The trip was led by Brian
Elder. The group found the Owl in the Spruce trees south of the horse corral just
east of the Environmental Centre which can be reached by following the signs from
37th St SW south of Anderson Rd.

Bill Wilson reported 4 - 5 BOREAL OWLS along Hwy 68 west of Calgary on Sunday, March
5. Bill found the birds between a point east of Bateman Creek westward to the
descent to Hwy 40, with other Owls reported by Bill being 2 BARRED OWLS and 2
NORTHERN PYGMY OWLS.

Counters at the Mt Lorette Raptor watch off Hwy 40 in Kananaskis Country had their
first double digit day of the season on Sunday, March 5. 24 GOLDEN EAGLES and 8
BALD EAGLES were counted.

Carol Shields, who lives in Namaka, reported on March 7 that SNOWY OWLS are still in
the Namaka - Eagle Lake area and several observers this week reported NORTHERN
FLICKER activity in the Calgary area.
