This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, August 22.
A FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen briefly at Richmond Pond in Westport on
Saturday but it has not been reported since. Other birds in the Westport area
included 148 GREAT EGRETS, 9 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 5 BLACK SCOTER,
59 OSPREY, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 951 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS,
787 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 36 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS,
1 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, 98 LAUGHING GULLS, 3 FORSTER'S
TERNS, 3 BLACK TERNS, and 9 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.
The WILSON'S PLOVER and the CURLEW SANDPIPER at South Beach in
Chatham were both still present there this weekend, and other reports from
South
Beach included 7 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS,
2800 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, roughly 3000 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, 140 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 250 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 225 WILLETS, 10 WHIMBREL, 55 HUDSONIAN
GODWITS, 7 MARBLED GODWITS, 250 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 800
RED KNOTS, 3500 SANDERLINGS, 2800 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS,
3 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 75 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 400 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS, 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 1300 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 4 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 5 LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS, 1 BLACK TERN, and 1 BLACK SKIMMER.
Seen at Plum Island were 1 LEAST BITTERN, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS,
1 MERLIN, 2 SORAS, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 650 SEMI-
PALMATED PLOVERS, 1 UPLAND SANDPIPER, 150 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS, 3 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 80 LEAST SANDPIPERS,
500 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 1 BUFF-
BREASTED SANDPIPER, 20 STILT SANDPIPERS, 70 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 5 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 LITTLE GULL, 3
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES, and 1 CANADA WARBLER.
Reports from the Great Meadows Refuge in Concord included 1 BLUE-
WINGED TEAL, 6 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 GREAT EGRET, 18
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 4 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, 15 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 80 LEAST SAND-
PIPERS, 6 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 1
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 5 WILSON'S SNIPE, and 1 SEDGE
WREN, and in Woburn there was an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, 9
WARBLING VIREOS, 3 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, 4 BROWN
THRASHERS, 7 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 1 CANADA WARBLER,
1 INDIGO BUNTING, and 7 BALTIMORE ORIOLES.
Seen on a boat trip from Newburyport to Jefferies Ledge were 14
GREATER SHEARWATERS, 4 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 10 MANX
SHEARWATERS, 120 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, and 2
unidentified jaegers, and miscellaneous reports included 1 MANX
SHEARWATER, roughly 1000 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, and
a SABINE'S GULL at Stellwagen Bank, and a HOODED WARBLER
at Morris Island in Chatham.
