This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting the
transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara is
(805) 964-8240.
A GRACE'S WARBLER found in Waller Park in Santa Maria was still present
Tuesday, in the short pines near Area 3, and the PINE WARBLER was also
present on Tuesday. Enter Waller Park from South Broadway at Waller Lane,
and drive into the center of the park beyond the first restroom. Area 3 is
on the left before the second restroom, which is under construction. Also in
the park this week were a PALM WARBLER, and a VARIED THRUSH. A ROSS'S GOOSE
and a CACKLING GOOSE are in the front pond.
Also in Santa Maria the wintering EASTERN PHOEBE continued on Sunday,
February 26 at the City Park at River Oaks.
A DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER found on December 31st along Atascadero Creek was
still present on February 20th. The bird is between Patterson and Ward
Drive, where a north-south line of willows meets the bike path. Park at the
end of Ward Drive, walk south to the creek, then walk east to the location
described above.
The FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCK was still at the Goleta Sewage Plant on February
24, but we have no report since. [It was seen on March 8.] The plant is
closed on weekends. Be sure to park by the office off to your right and do
not park by the ponds or work sheds. Please walk into the office and sign
in. Walk east down to the ponds and look for the bird from the asphalt on
the west side of the ponds. Do not walk on the berms.
At UCSB, a PALM WARBLER was near the southwestern corner of the UCSB lagoon
on Sunday.
On Tecolotito Creek, the LUCY'S WARBLER and the CASSIN'S VIREO were still
present on Sunday the 5th, near where the Los Carneros bridge crosses the
creek.
[The BROWN THRASHER was seen at El Capitan State Beach behind campsite #89
in the last week or 2, but is very difficult to see. Early morning seems to
be best.]
In Bohnett Park, on the west side of Santa Barbara, the HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER
was not reported this week. The park is on the corner of San Andres and
Victoria Streets.
Highlights from the Cachuma Lake boat trips last week included 13 WHITE
PELICANS, 4 COMMON GOLDENEYE, and 1 adult and 2 immature BALD EAGLES.
In the North County, a LONG-TAILED DUCK remained at the Santa Ynez River
mouth on February 22nd in Ocean Park.
In Lompoc, two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are still in Old La Purisima Mission
Park on the south side. Look in the blackberry bushes in the southeast
corner of the park. Both birds were seen on the 2nd.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
