You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey

sightings of DICKCISSEL, GREAT CORMORANT, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, AMERICAN
BITTERN, MERLIN, LAUGHING GULL, GOLDEN EAGLE, PINE WARBLER, SNOWY
OWL, EURASIAN WIGEON, EASTERN BLUEBIRD and WINTER WREN

Please excuse the lack of hotline coverage in the last week. We
apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused. This
weeks’ hotline will cover mostly the week of 3/4-3/11 and a few
highlights from the previous week.

There have been a good number of WOODCOCK “peenting” in Cape May this
last week. They have been heard from Higbee’s WMA to Cape May Point,
one was even heard directly behind the Northwood Center on the
evening of 3/9.

The DICKCISSEL has been again, re-found, along Stevens St. in Cape
May this week. The bird was reported with a flock of HOUSE SPARROWS
on 3/10.

On 3/8, eight GREAT CORMORANT were reported from the jetty at Two-
Mile Beach. On 3/10 four were reported along with PURPLE SANDPIPER.

Also on 3/8 a RUSTY BLACKBIRD was heard calling at Higbee’s WMA. On
3/6, three were seen at the Beanery. The AMERICAN BITTERN continues
at the Meadows and was seen today 3/11.

The first LAUGHING GULL of the year was spotted on 3/7 with
approximately 200+ BONAPARTE’S GULLS at the Cape May/Lewes Ferry
terminal. Also the same day at the ferry terminal was a MERLIN.

GOLDEN EAGLES were seen on 3/3 and 3/5 from Brigantine and from the
Garden State Parkway.

A PINE WARBLER was heard singing in the Goshen area on the morning of
3/9. Signs of spring!

A late report of SNOWY OWL from a back yard in Wildwood Crest on
2/20, no reports of this bird have come in since the (2/20) bird was
reported on 3/2. Also at the end of last month a EURASIAN WIGEON was
seen on 2/28 at Brigantine NWR.

In Rio Grande a flock of 12 or more EASTERN BLUEBIRDS was seen near
the Social Services Building on Rte. 9. Lastly, WINTER WRENS have
been being seen with some frequency from the Beanery and Higbee’s WMA
in the last couple of weeks.

CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center in Cape May
Point, as promised, has returned to being open 7 days a week 9-4:30.
The Center for Research and Education on Route 47 in Goshen is open 7
