____ DUPAGE COUNTY ______________________________________

A couple WHOOPING CRANES were seen flying with a large flock of SANDHILL
CRANES over Glen Ellyn around Noon on March 10th.

At the Morton Arboretum on March 11, birds seen included two flyover
TUNDRA SWANS (moving from Arbor Lake on the West side to somewhere on
the East side) and two CHIPPING SPARROWS.

On March 4th at Songbird Slough, birds seen include ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
and a PEREGRINE FALCON. Ducks on the slough included three COMMON
MERGANSERS.

At Greene Valley on March 4, the NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in the usual
location along the trails near the parking lot to the Thunderbird Camp.
An EASTERN TOWHEE was also seen.

Three GREATER SCAUP and 28 REDHEADS were seen in a lake that is just
north of 103rd street and west of Woodward Avenue in Woodridge. A few
birds of each species were still present as of March 11th along with a
couple RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS.

Ducks at Pratt's Wayne Woods (lakes west of the Main Parking lot) on
March 10, included RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, RING-NECKED DUCK, NORTHERN
SHOVELER, and AMERICAN WIDGEON.

At Mallard Lake on March 10, a couple RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were seen.

At Blackwell FP on March 8, two COMMON GOLDENEYE were seen at Silver
Lake. A BELTED KINGFISHER was also seen along the river north of Silver
Lake.

Ducks at Springbrook Prairie this week include LESSER SCAUP, HOODED
MERGANSER, GADWALL, RING-NECKED DUCK, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, AMERICAN COOT,
and MALLARDS.

Recent sightings at Elsen's Hill include GRAY CATBIRD, EASTERN PHOEBE,
and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.

MONK PARAKEETS are still present at their usual locations in Addison
along the power lines between Addison Road and Villa Ave, and just south
of Fullerton.

SANDHILL CRANES have been seen flying over in large numbers at many
locations this past weekend.

AMERICAN WOODCOCKS are being seen at a number of locations this week
including Elsen's Hill, Oldfield Oaks FP, Pratt's Wayne Woods,
Springbrook Prairie, and other locations.

KILLDEER, COMMON GRACKLES, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, EASTERN PHOEBES and
other early migrants have returned to many locations this week.

____ KANE COUNTY ______________________________________

Recent sightings at Nelson Lake Marsh (Dick Young FP) include two HORNED
GREBES, REDHEADS, NORTHERN PINTAILS, HOODED MERGANSERS, COMMON
MERGANSERS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, AMERICAN WIDGEON, LESSER SCAUP, GADWALL,
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, WOOD DUCKS, RUDDY DUCKS, and AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS. A
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and an AMERICAN PIPIT were also seen.

After the last snow storm, several hundred LAPLAND LONGSPURS, including
some birds getting their breeding plumage were seen along Seavey Rd
between Bliss Rd and Rte 47. (west and slightly south of Nelson Lake Marsh).

____ FERMILAB SIGHTINGS ________________________________

Species seen on March 11th around Lake Law include GADWALL, AMERICAN
WIGEON, AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, MALLARDS, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN
SHOVELER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCKS,
BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and COMMON MERGANSERS. A couple flyover
AMERICAN PIPITS were also seen.

____ UPCOMING FIELD TRIPS ______________________________

Saturday. March 18, 8:00 a.m. Shabbona Lake (DeKalb Co.).
This trip is for waterfowl and early migrants. Take I-88 west, exit at
IL-56 (to US-30/IL-47) and drive about 18 miles west on US-30 to IL-23
(past Hinckley Airport). Drive south for less than a mile to Forest
Preserve Rd (990N), turn right and then follow signs to the entrance for
Shabbona St.P. Meet at the concession stand by the lake. Website.

Sunday, March 19, 6:30 a.m. Mississippi River.
This is an all day trip. Large numbers of waterfowl will be seen. We
will meet at the west end of the Jewel parking lot in Woodridge at 75th
St. and Janes Ave. (just west of I-355). The trip will be limited to 15
people. Registration with the leader required.

Sunday, March 19, 8:00 a.m. Lyons Woods F.P. & Lake Michigan (Lake Co.).
Lyons Woods is locted on Blanchard Rd. off Sheridan Rd. in Beach Park.
Exit from I-294 or I-94 on eastbound Grand Ave.(IL-132) or Belvedere Rd.
(IL-120) and continue to Sheridan Rd. Turn left (north) on Sheridan Rd.
About 1.5 miles north of Greenwood Ave., turn left (west) on Blanchard.
The entrance is immediately on the right.
