A COMMON GRACKLE appeared in a yard at a residence in the Southview subdivision of
Calgary on Saturday, March 11. Status of the bird as a Spring arrival here is
uncertain as there were at least 2 separate reports of single COMMON GRACKLES
reported in southeast Calgary during the December - February Winter season. Carol
Coulter saw the March 11 bird.
Other reports of interest over the weekend included a DARK-EYED JUNCO observed by
Molly Milne in her yard in the Marlborough district of Calgary on the morning of
Monday, March 13. Molly also reported 2 AMERICAN CROWS in her neighborhood on
Tuesday, March 7, while on Monday, March 6, Carol Coulter reported an AMERICAN ROBIN
from the Southview area.
There have been few waterfowl reports recently. Nimali Seneviratne observed a
female HOODED MERGANSER by the Hwy 22X bridge in east Fish Creek PP on Sunday, March
12. This is a location at which this species has not been seen in recent weeks.
The Mt Lorette Raptor Watch off Hwy 40 in Kananaskis Country should be approaching
peak GOLDEN EAGLE numbers within the next couple of weeks. Counters there had at
least 2 triple digit days of GOLDEN EAGLES this past week.
WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN can still be seen in the Bow Pass area off Hwy 93 between
Banff and Jasper. Bill Wilson observed 2 birds approximately 3 kms south of the
Peyto Lake Viewpoint access road on Saturday, March 11.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, March 16.
