Among the many migrants reported in the Chicago are the last week were
PIED-BILLED and HORNED GREBES, WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, most of the dabbling
ducks, AMERICAN COOT, WOODCOCK, SNIPE, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, MERLIN, TURKEY VULTURE, TREE SWALLOW, AMERICAN PIPIT,
KINGFISHER, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, HERMIT THRUSH, CATBIRD,
SAPSUCKER, FLICKER, WINTER WREN, EASTERN PHOEBE, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN, TOWHEE, PURPLE FINCH,
and WHITE-THROATED, WHITE-CROWNED, CHIPPING, SAVANNAH, and FIELD SPARROWS.
A SURF SCOTER was seen March 12th at Nelson Lake in Batavia.
Last weekend, among over 4000 SANDHILL CRANES, which migrated past the
Chicago are, were two WHOOPING CRANES in Glen Ellyn and one WHOOPING CRANE
at Poplar Creek Forest Preserve.
NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen last weekend at Rollins Savanna, Fermilab, and
Montrose.
Three HARLEQUIN DUCKS were still present March 9th at North Avenue Beach
south of the Chess Pavilion.
Seen at Van Patten Woods last weekend were GLAUCOUS, two ICELAND, and three
to four THAYER'S GULLS.
Birding American VII will be taking place Saturday, March 18th at North
Park University at 3224 W. Foster Avenue from 9:00am to 4:00pm. To
register call the Chicago Audubon office at 773-539-6793. Topics will
include the Ivory-bill and the boreal, flycatcher and duck identification,
birding the Chicago River, Iroquois County, Hennepin, southeast Wisconsin,
the Pribolofs, Costa Rica, the Rio Grande Valley, Minnesota owls,
digiscoping, and gardening for birds and butterflies.
