This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday March 16, 2006 with reports of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE, SANDHILL CRANE, REEVE, seasonal

A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was observed at Conaskonk Point Mar 11
from the western access off Edmund Street in Union Beach. Also on
Raritan Bay were two BLACK BRANT at South Amboy Waterfront Park Mar
9. The pair is usually among a few hundred pale-bellied BRANT that
feed on the athletic fields (see NJAS's website at www.njaudubon.org/
centers/shbo and click on Birding Raritan Bay for details).

A surprising find at Sandy Hook this week was a COMMON RAVEN over
Raccoon Alley Mar 13, and seen again near North Beach Mar 16. An
excellent flight of 80 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS was tallied at the
hawkwatch Mar 16 and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was viewed there Mar 15.
Also at the hook Mar 11-13 were 100+ SURF SCOTERS, 70 BLACK SCOTERS,
and 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS off C-lot, the drake EURASIAN WIGEON at
the salt pond, BLACK VULTURE, 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, 5+ EASTERN
MEADOWLARKS, 30 SNOW BUNTINGS, 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS, 10 FOX SPARROWS
and 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook
is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports.

Along the North Shore, the drake EURASIAN WIGEON continued through
Mar 11 at Little Silver Lake in Point Pleasant Beach, along with 4
REDHEADS. Three REDHEADS were found this week at Lake Takanassee.

The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE continues in the Holmdel area, viewed
among the CANADA GOOSE flock along Willow Brook Rd near Cross Farm
Park Mar 12. Also there was a CACKLING GOOSE (DeLorme P. 44, F-8).

In Salem County a REEVE was reported in a little pond off Featherbed
Lane Mar 14. Two SANDHILL CRANES were flybys along Rte 49 Mar 11.
Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were still present by the small puddles and
torn-up sod east of the intersection of Rte 40 and Pointers-Auburn Rd
Mar 11. Mannington Marsh continues to host large numbers of
waterfowl this week, including TUNDRA SWAN and BLUE-WINGED TEAL.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was noted at Brigantine NWR along the south dike;
also at Brig this week were 21 TUNDRA SWANS, and BLUE-WINGED TEAL
among large numbers of waterfowl.

An ICELAND GULL highlighted birds viewed at Weequahic Park in Newark
Mar 10.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was observed over Caven Point Rd near Liberty State
