A note regarding the upcoming VNHS meeting:

The speaker and topic for the VNHS Evening Program on March 23 have
been changed from R. Wayne Campbell to Derek Matthews, who will
speak on Operation Purple Martin - An Introduction to the Wild Bird Trust
of BC's Purple Martin Colony at the Conservation Area at Maplewood Flats.


No reports for Wednesday, March 15th.


Sightings for Tuesday, March 14th:

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, the GOLDEN EAGLE was present
at the start of the entrance road.

At the Tsawwassen ferry terminal in Delta, the overwintering WILLET
remains. Nearby on the rocky breakwater south of the ferry terminal
were 100 BRANDT'S CORMORANTS.

Also in Delta, 12 SNOWY OWLS were seen at the foot of 72nd St and
another at the foot of 64th St.


Sightings for Monday, March 13th:

At Iona, the female REDHEAD was present on the outer ponds. Nearby on
Sea Island was 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE and 8 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS.

At Reifel, a SWAMP SPARROW was seen just north of the tower on the salt
marsh.


Sightings for Sunday, March 12th:

Along Deltaport Way, up to 3 GYRFALCONS were present, at least 1
grey-phase and 1 dark-phase between 41B St and the base of the
coal port jetty. Nearby were a pair of AMERICAN KESTRELS.

At Brunswick Point were 5 SNOWY OWLS, 3 AMERICAN BITTERNS,
a NORTHERN SHRIKE. and 2 LEAST SANDPIPERS. Nine WESTERN
MEADOWLARKS were seen along River Road 200 metres east of the
parking area.

At Reifel, the GOLDEN EAGLE was present along the entrance road.
Around the sanctuary were 4 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, a NORTHERN SAW-WHET
OWL, and a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE.

At the Tsawwassen jetty, 3 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen near the boat
launch. 1 EARED GREBE was present on the north side of the jetty. Birders
are warned that the gravel road on the south side of the jetty is impassable
for some cars because of storm damage.

At Boundary Bay, 1 MARBLED GODWIT was seen from the mansion
near the foot of 96th Street, and a SHORT-EARED OWL flew over 96th.
50 AMERICAN PIPITS were present off 88th St. At the foot of 72nd Street
were 9 SNOWY OWLS, 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS, and 2 WESTERN
MEADOWLARKS.


Sightings for Saturday, March 11th:

At Iona Island in Richmond, a REDHEAD was present in the outer pond
and the ROCK WREN was reported from the south jetty.

Along Deltaport Way in Delta, the GYRFALCON was seen on the hay bale
between 41B St and the overpass. Also along Deltaport Way were 2
AMERICAN KESTRELS and 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. Nearby
at Brunswick Point, 5 SNOWY OWLS and an AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW were present.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, the GOLDEN EAGLE was again
present, perched in a conifer at the start of the entrance road.

At the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta, 2 SURFBIRDS were present.

North of Boundary Bay in Delta, a GYRFALCON was seen flying over
the 72nd St. golf course. Nearby, east of the foot of 72nd St, 6 SNOWY
OWLS and 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen.


Sightings for Friday, March 10th:

At Brunswick Point, a presumed PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was present
with BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS in a field west of the base of 34th St.
Along the dyke, 3 SNOWY OWLS were seen.

Along Deltaport Way, the GYRFALCON was seen on the hay bale
between 41B Street and the overpass.

Another GYRFALCON was seen along 112th St. in Delta.

At Blackie Spit in Surrey, 2 MARBLED GODWITS were seen at Farm Slough.

In North Delta, in the 9500 block near 116th St, the TOWNSEND'S
WARBLER was sighted again in a back garden.

Sightings for Tuesday, March 7th:

At the Iona Island south jetty in Richmond, the long-staying ROCK WREN
continues between the two shelters.

In Delta south of Ladner, a grey-phase GYRFALCON was present on
a dirt pile between 34th Ave and Delta Port Way.

At the Tsawwassen jetty in Delta, 3 or 4 SNOW BUNTINGS were
observed briefly before flying away.
