This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey AUDUBON SOCIETY FOR
TUESDAY AUGUST 23, 2005 WITH REPORTS OF KING EIDER, AUDUBON'S
SHEARWATER, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, MARBLED GODWIT, BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER, SANDWICH TERN, seasonal and local reports of interest.

Sandy Hook's salt pond hosted 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS Aug 21-22.
Also there this week were a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER Aug 19 & 22 and 2 WHITE-
RUMPED SANDPIPERS. A flyover UPLAND SANDPIPER was noted there Aug
19. An immature male KING EIDER was found along the beach east of
the end of the fisherman's trail Aug 22 and a SANDWICH TERN was a
flyby there as well. Large numbers of terns have been around the
hook this week as well including 650 COMMON TERNS, up to 7 BLACK
TERNS, and 2 ROYAL TERNS. A modest landbird flight Aug 23 included
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 2 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER, and CANADA WARBLER. A free detailed birding map of Sandy
Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily
reports.

Brigantine NWR Aug 20 had the continuing AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN,
MARBLED GODWIT, 12 STILT SANDPIPERS, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and a
TRICOLORED HERON that was captured and eaten by a Snapping Turtle!

A MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD was discovered off the end of Great Bay
Blvd near Tuckerton Aug 20 - no reports since. Also there that day
were 3 BROWN PELICANS and 3 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.

The Johnson Sod Farm on the Salem/Cumberland County border Aug 19-22
had 5 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 4-11 UPLAND SANDPIPERS, and 5-11 BUFF-
BREASTED SANDPIPERS, mostly along the Olivet/Hannans Rd area. Also
in Salem County were 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at the DeLea Sod Farm,
98 CATTLE EGRETS along Compromise Rd, and COMMON MOORHEN at
Mannington Marsh.

Weekend sightings from Stone Harbor Point in Cape May County include
GREAT CORMORANT, up to 11 MARBLED GODWITS, 250 RED KNOT, 7+ BLACK
TERNS, and 17 SANDWICH TERNS. The Two Mile Beach Unit of Cape May
NWR had 45 BLACK TERNS and 7 SANDWICH TERNS Aug 21. A RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD was a fly-by at the Higbee dike and a RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE was in the impoundment there Aug 22.

A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was found in one of the retention ponds on the
Sawmill Landfill in the Hackensack Meadowlands Aug 23 and the male
BLUE GROSBEAK was still there as well.

The Belmar Pelagic Aug 20 tallied 2 AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS, 11 CORY'S
SHEARWATERS, 200 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, and a BLACK TERN.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Sandy Hook has no summer entrance fee for birding as long as you park
in designated lots. Tell the toll attendant "you are birding and not
parking in beach access lots." This allows you to park at the
Visitor Center, Horseshoe Cove, Scout Camp, all Fort Hancock lots, K-
lot, and SHBO. Fees are not charged before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
If you arrive before 7 am an attendant at the Ranger Station will
give you a pass that allows you access to all parking areas.
