This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for March 19, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Yellow
Grosbeak, White-tailed Kite, Eurasian Wigeon.
Some migrants seem to be returning early. There have been very few reports
of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills, Evening Grosbeaks, Clark's Nutcrackers,
and Pine Grosbeaks.
Turkey Vultures are returning – it’s spring! We are finally getting some
moisture.

In Colfax County:
DC on Stubblefield Lake found a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE. It was still there
on March 18 with a CALIFRONIA GULL. Four TUNDRA SWANS are still on Lake 11
near the Maxwell Refuge.
At the Maxwell Refuge on A5 just north of the juncion with A1 on March 17
there were six LONG-EARED OWLS and a BARN OWL.
At the Cimarron Canyon State Park east of Eagle Nest DC found on US 64 on
March 1 a WINTER WREN at mile marker 289 above the beaver dams.
In Quay County:
DC on March 15 at Ute Lake saw seven COMMON LOONS, four HORNED GREBES, two
WOOD DUCKS, two HERRING GULLS, a FRANKLIN’S GULL, and two BLUE JAYS.
In Cibola County:
BF and PS found up to 30 PINYON JAYS in Bluewater Canyon on March 3. There
were scattered WHITE PELICANS on Bluewater Lake. BN and CR on March 5
counted 49 pelicans. They saw many of the jays in the western Zuni Mts. from the
El Malpais NM to Bluewater Canyon.
In Bernalillo County:
The YELLOW GROSBEAK is at 1412 Las Lomas NE in Albuquerque near the UNM
campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and two
stoplights north of Central. (There are two Lomas Streets). Turn west on Las
Lomas, it is in the backyard feeders of a very gracious host. Many have
viewed it through March 18 by LF.
DD on March 15 reported a SAW-WHET OWL has been around his home for several
weeks south of Tijeras on NM 337 two miles from the Ponderosa Bar. Call at
281-5797.
PLy saw the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the Rio Grande Nature Center in
Albuquerque on March 12. NC says they banded an EASTERN BLUEBIRD and the red FOX
SPARROW on March 18.
JO saw the male EURASIAN WIGEON at Mariposa Basin Park off Taylor Ranch Road
in Albuquerque on March 12.
At the Crest House feeders on Sandia Crest SNC say flocks of ROSY FINCHES,
mostly BLACKS, are present. The banding team by March 5 have banded a total
this winter of 290, including 215 Blacks, 43 BROWN-CAPPED and 32 GRAY-CROWNED.
Five of the Hepburn's race have been banded, an unbanded one was seen on
March 11. They may be leaving soon.
JH had five PINYON JAYS on NM 14 about five miles north of the NM 536
turnoff to the crest near Sandia Park.
In Valencia county;
JP and WW on March 18 saw three BLACK-NECKED STILTS at the marsh behind the
Taco Bell in Belen.
In Socorro County:
DH on March 15 had an adult TUNDRA SWAN on the La Joya State Refuge near
Bernardo.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio DB on March 4 saw the dark
morph ROUGH=LEGGED HAWK and a MERLIN. Both were reported by PLy on March 11 with
two KRIDER’S RED-TAILED HAWKS. JP and WW on March 18 again saw the HARRIS’
S SPARROW at the headquarters.
JO at his home near Luis Lopez south of Socorro on March 1 had a HARRIS’S
and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. He still had the Harris’s and two or three of
the White-throats by March 19.
He reported that JD and DQ saw a PINE WARBLER on the NMTU campus in Socorro
on March 16.
In Chaves County:
SW had a SWAINSON’S HAWK on March 18 north of Roswell.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park PY reported the BULLOCK’S ORIOLE was still present
on March 13 with an OSPREY. JP and WW had a singing YELLOW WARBLER on March
18.
At Riverside Park below Caballo Dam on March 18 they found the ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER was still present with a male COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
In Grant County:
DBe had a MYRTLE WARBLER in his Silver City yard March 12.
PT on March 5 had a female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in her Silver City yard and
reported that JDM had another at Roberts Lake. She also heard two male
BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRDS on March 2.
CL saw two WHITE-TAILED KITES two miles west of Hachita on February 18. On
March 3 he saw three south of Hachita between mile markers 35 and 36.
Not a bird, but EL saw a javelina at the Tyrone Sewage ponds on March 5.
DBe reported several flocks totaling 100 GAMBEL’S QUAILS in the Fort Bayard
area on March 6.
In Hidalgo County:
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.
In Luna County:
On March 18 CL had a BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD and a VERMILION FLYCATCHER in
Pecan Park in Deming.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to a
year for construction.
In Dona Ana County:
JN on March 13 had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE along the arroyo that crosses
Univerity Ave. about a quarter mile north of its intersection with Avenida de
Mesilla. CL saw it March 15.
At the Old Refuge (Mesilla Valley Bosque Park) south of Mesilla CL again
found the ZONE-TAILED HAWK on March 11. JDo saw it on March 16. On March 15 CL
had a GOSHAWK and a SWAMP SPARROW. CCBr reported a PERRGRIND FALLCON, but
no goshawk, on March 15.
CBr had a ZONE-TAILED HAWK with 20 TURKEY VULTURES over the Rio Grande in
Mesilla on March 14.
At ‘Varied Thrush Lane’ about .6 mile north of the Mesilla Dam JN on March
13 had a MERLIN, a male YELLOWTHROAT, a SWAMP SPARROW, and up to 12 WOOD
DUCKS. (Two of the psrrows were there on March 2).
JZ and MS on March 4 had an adult HARLAN’S HAWK at a pecan orchard just west
of the NM 28 intersection with Snow Road. CL saw it on March 7 along the
Rio two miles south of the Mesilla Dam.
JZ ans MS had a female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at their home near Radium Springs
on March 16.
CL had a CASSIN’S VIREO in Mesilla Park on March 8.
In Soledad Canyon in the Organ Mts. on March 3 JN a HUTTON’S VIREO.
DG had the COMMON GROUND-DOVE at his Las Cruces home on March 8.
In Otero County:
BB on March 6 found a BELL’S VIREO near Dog Canyon south of Alamogordo.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.
In Eddy County:
RC at Rattlesnake Springs on March 14 found a BROWN THRASHER and a
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.
