Rare Bird Alert: SLATY-BACKED GULL (out of town)

Sunday, March 19
A SLATY-BACKED GULL was seen up island throughout the day just off the
viewing platform at Qualicum Beach among many gulls, sea ducks, and BRANT.
Locally, at the Vantreight Bulb Fields, there were 8 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS and
a MOURNING DOVE along with many SKY LARKS .

Saturday, March 18
1 WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen along the new trail between Blenkinsop
Road and Lochside Trail south of Blenkinsop Lake. It was seen with about 15
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS.
7 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen on the Galey Brothers Farm at the
south end of Blenkinsop Lake.
1 VIRGINIA RAIL was seen at the south end of the bridge at Blenkinsop Lake.
There have been numerous sightings of a VIRGINIA RAIL or two at this
location the past two weeks.
A third-winter HERRING GULL was at Esquimalt Lagoon.
1 TUNDRA SWAN was seen at Maple Grove Park at Cowichan Bay up in Duncan
along with 40 TRUMPETER SWANS.

Friday, March 17
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Viaduct Flats in the main parking lot at the
end of Viaduct Ave. at Interurban Road. A RUDDY DUCK was seen on the water.
125 WESTERN GREBES were seen at the south end of Esquimalt Lagoon on the
ocean side.
1 GOLDEN EAGLE was seen on Mt. Wells.
A male REDHEAD was seen again on Kings Pond.
5 BRANT were seen at Clover Point.
Up island in the Parksville - Qualicum area there were over 3000 BRANT and
many gulls and sea ducks which numbers peak towards the end of the month.

Thursday, March 16
A male REDHEAD was seen on Kings Pond in Victoria.
At Esquimalt Lagoon there were 11 CANVASBACKS. Also there were several
hundred SCAUP, 15 DUNLIN, 15 BLACK TURNSTONES and 10 CALIFORNIA GULLS.

Wednesday, March 15
A third year SLATY-BACKED GULL was seen up island in the Parksville area
near the old hovercraft space at Parksville Bay.

Tuesday, March 14
A RED KNOT was seen at Cattle Point along with SURFBIRDS.
At Mystic Vale at UVIC there was 1 HAIRY WOODPECKER and 1 HUTTON'S VIREO.
At Blenkinsop Lake there were 3 species of swallows seen: TREE SWALLOWS,
BARN SWALLOWS and VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS.
At Clover Point there were 8 BRANT, 8 SANDERLINGS and 1 RHINOCEROS AUKLET.
