On the Upper Texas Coast a SURFBIRD* (Aphriza virgata) was found at Bolivar
Flats on March 12 and subsequently found again in Galveston at the end of the
jetty at the end of 17th Street on March 15. No further reports have been
received. A POMARINE JAEGER (Stercorarius pomarinus) and a GLAUCOUS GULL (Larus
hyperboreus) have been seen at Bolivar Flats and the Ferry Landing recently.
SWALLOW-TAILED KITES (Elanoides forficatus) have returned to Liberty, East of
Houston. The earliest migrating warblers are showing up at the usual migrant
traps on the coast. TENNESSEE WARBLER (Vermivora peregrina), NORTHERN PARULA,
(Parula americana), YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER (Dendroica dominica), PALM WARBLER
(Dendroica palmarum), BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER (Mniotilta varia), KENTUCKY WARBLER
(Oporornis formosus), HOODED WARBLER (Wilsonia citrina), and LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH (Seirus motacilla) have all been reported.
In the Coastal Bend area a banded GREATER FLAMINGO* (Phoenicopterus ruber) is
being seen on Poverty Reef south of Bludworth Island between Carlos Bay and the
Inter-coastal Waterway. This area is only accessible by boat. The Whooping Crane
tour boats pass this area. A GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL* (Larus marinus) was
reported from the beach between Port Aransas and Corpus Christi at mile marker 49
on March 16.
In South Central Texas a RUFOUS-CAPPED WARBLER* was found at Neal’s Lodge in
Concan on March 14. The bird was behind cabin 42 along the hillside facing the
river. It has not been reported since.
In the Rio Grande Valley a PIRATIC FLYCATCHER* (Legatus leucophaius) was found
yesterday, March 20 at Bentsen State Park off of the old trailer loop. It was
seen today in the picnic area near the Resaca. Ask the park staff for updated
information and please update the RBA if you see this bird. The GRAY-CROWNED
YELLOWTHROATS* (Geothlypis poliocephalus) are still being seen at Sabal Palms
Audubon Center in Brownsville. Ask the staff for directions. An unusual Jay that
has been identified as either a YUCATAN or SAN BLAS JAY is being seen in San
Ygnacio at the refuge at the end of Washington St. The bird is of questionable
origin.
In the Trans-pecos a VARIED THRUSH* (Ixoreus naevius) was reported from
Cottonwood Campground at Big Bend National Park last week. No further sightings
have been made.
