Tuesday, March 21, 2006. 9:00 pm update. Compiled by Rick Schortinghuis and
transcribed by Cheryl Mackie.

RARE BIRD ALERT for a PAINTED BUNTING
Tuesday, March 21
A female PAINTED BUNTING was seen coming to a feeder at 906 Damelart
Way in Brentwood Bay this afternoon between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. If
you are coming to look for this bird please park on the street
before you get to the cul-de-sac, 906 is at the end, and please do
not park in the driveway. Walk up the left side of the driveway to
the sundeck to look for the bird. It was seen at the feeder in the
corner of the front yard. Be careful of the steps as you go up the
deck. Also check the feeder in the back yard. This is only the second
record for British Columbia and a first for Victoria.
On Mt Wells there was 1 BLUE GROUSE hooting, 1 BAND-TAILED PIGEON, 1
MERLIN and 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.
Monday, March 20
An early OSPREY was over Mill Hill Regional Park in Langford.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was again over Mt Wells off Humpback Road in Langford.
Sunday, March 19
An adult SLATY-BACKED GULL was seen up island throughout the day
just off the viewing platform at Qualicum Beach among many gulls,
sea ducks, and BRANT.
An early CASSIN'S VIREO was at the parking lot at Mt. Wells Regional
Park.
Locally, at the Vantreight Bulb Fields, there were 8 WESTERN
MEADOWLARKS and a MOURNING DOVE along with many SKY LARKS.
A WESTERN MEADOWLARK was at Beacon Hill Park off Haywood Way on the
east side of the park near the playing fields.
Saturday, March 18
1 WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen along the new trail between
Blenkinsop Road and Lochside Trail south of Blenkinsop Lake. It was
seen with about 15 GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS.
7 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen on the Galey Brothers Farm
at the south end of Blenkinsop Lake.
1 VIRGINIA RAIL was seen at the south end of the bridge at
Blenkinsop Lake. There have been numerous sightings of a VIRGINIA
RAIL or two at this location the past two weeks.
A third-winter HERRING GULL was at Esquimalt Lagoon in Colwood.
1 TUNDRA SWAN was seen at Maple Grove Park at Cowichan Bay up in
Duncan along with 40 TRUMPETER SWANS.
Friday, March 17
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Viaduct Flats in the main parking lot
at the end of Viaduct Ave. at Interurban Road. A RUDY DUCK was seen
on the water.
125 WESTERN GREBES were seen at the south end of Esquimalt Lagoon on
the ocean side.
1 GOLDEN EAGLE was seen on Mt Wells.
A male REDHEAD was seen again on Kings Pond.
5 BRANT were seen at Clover Point.
Up island in the Parksville - Qualicum Beach area, there were over 3000
BRANT and many gulls and sea ducks which numbers peak towards
the end of the month.
Thursday, March 16
A male REDHEAD was seen on Kings Pond in Victoria.
At Esquimalt Lagoon there were 11 CANVASBACKS. Also there were
several hundred SCAUP, 15 DUNLIN, 15 BLACK TURNSTONES and 10
CALIFORNIA GULLS.
Wednesday, March 15
A third year SLATY-BACKED GULL was reported up island in the
Parksville area near the old hovercraft base at Parksville Bay.
Tuesday, March 14
A RED KNOT was seen at Cattle Point along with SURF BIRDS.
At Mystic Vale at UVIC there was 1 HAIRY WOODPECKER and 1 HUTTON'S
VIREO.
At Blenkinsop Lake there were 3 species of swallows seen: TREE
SWALLOWS, BARN SWALLOWS and VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS.
At Clover Point there were 8 BRANT, 8 SANDERLINGS and 1
RHINOCEROS AUKLET.
