Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Gerco Hoogeweg reported a lot of bird activity in Redlands, most notably a
male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD feeding in his front yard.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Howard King reported the LITTLE GULL is still at Lake Perris and can
usually be seen from the east end of parking lot 12.

Roger Higson spotted a SWAINSON’S HAWK on a tree in his yard, and also
spotted his first WESTERN KINGBIRD of the spring.

Chet McGaugh reported on a trip to Salt Creek on March 18. He saw lots of
WESTERN KINGBIRDS, a WARBLING VIREO near the Coachella Canal, and a LESSER
NIGHTHAWK near Slab City. The Salt Creek area itself continues to have at
least one WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, an immature male, eight BLUE-WINGED TEAL,
several RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS and COMMON GOLDENEYES. Chet also saw a
female VERMILION FLYCATCHER at the mouth of the creek, foraging from the
ground and low snags, and making short trips out over the sea.

Madeline continues to record sightings of the Merlin at Goose Creek Golf
Course at Mira Loma. It was seen on March 21 at 66th and Lucretia and
sometimes at 66th and William. To reach this area, take the I-15, then
take Limonite east to Etiwanda, south to 66th (L intersection), west for 3
blocks to William, and then west to Lucretia.

A birder from Quartzite, a town in Arizona about 20 miles east of Blythe,
reported on some birds he has seen. He noted he has spotted several
BULLOCK’S ORIOLES and HOODED ORIOLES, quite a few ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRDS and
COSTA’S HUMMINGBIRDS, one RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, a pair of LADDER-BACKED
WOODPECKERS and several GILA WOODPECKERS. He mentioned a number of other
birds as well.

IMPERIAL COUNTY

Henry Detwiler reported from the southeast Imperial Valley and the Salton
Sea on March 19. He saw three GULL-BILLED TERNS at the end of Garst Road,
a continuing STILT SANDPIPER along Garst Road, continuing MOUNTAIN PLOVERS
across Blair Road from Calipatria Prison, a male HOODED ORIOLE along
Sperry Road, 2 doors south of Eddins, and a HERMIT THRUSH at Finney Lake.
He mentioned that, if you venture further to Yuma West Wetlands, entrance
north of 1st Street off of 12th Ave., you should check the mesquites on
the west end of the park for PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER, GRAY FLYCATCHER,
and BELL’S VIREO.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
