This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, March 23. Please
report sightings to Jon Fisher via e-mail (or at 818-544-5009).
A LONG-TAILED DUCK continues in the Ballona Creek channel at Playa del Rey.
From the west end of the 90 Freeway, take Culver west to Pacific and then go
right to the end and park. The most recent report is from March 22 when the
bird was near the Pacific Avenue bridge.
An adult LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen nearby in Playa del Rey on March 23.
The bird was near the intersection of Pacific and Voyage on the north side
of Ballona channel.
Reports of migrant SWAINSON'S HAWKS this past week included two birds over
Claremont on March 19 and one at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on March
21.
A CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was at Hansen Dam near Sylmar on March 19. The
location is along the dirt road between the soccer fields and lake, east of
the Foothill Blvd. parking lot. Look for the patch of golden currant where
the bird was seen at the spot where the road is bordered by a eucalyptus and
an oak tree. A GRAY FLYCATCHER continues in the lower part of the basin
below the Dronfield entrance. Two HORNED GREBES, scarce away from the
coast, were on the lake at Hansen Dam on March 19.
An EASTERN PHOEBE continues at Rustic Canyon Golf Course in Moorpark. The
bird was seen on March 22 in the small trees adjacent to the driving range
PAINTED REDSTARTS continue to turn up, with the latest bird being found at
Eaton Canyon in Pasadena on March 20. The bird was just above the Toll Road
bridge at the canyon's north end. A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continues to be
easy to find just west of the Nature Center at the south end of the canyon.
Another PAINTED REDSTART continues at Bonelli Regional Park. The bird was
most recently seen near Restroom #7, rather than RR #8 where is has been for
months. Also present at Bonelli is a PLUMBEOUS VIREO near the southeast
corner of the lake and a COMMON GOLDENEYE.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
