This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, March 24 at 1 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting the
transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara is
(805) 964-8240.
A FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen yesterday afternoon just east of Campus Point on
the UCSB campus just after noon. The bird did not stay long, but headed
toward Goleta Beach. We have no further report.
A GRACE'S WARBLER found in Waller Park in Santa Maria was still present on
Wednesday - along with the PINE WARBLER - in the pines near Area 3. Enter
Waller Park from South Broadway at Waller Lane, and drive into the center of
the park beyond the first restroom. Area 3 is on the left before the second
restroom, which is under construction.
A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was seen on Saturday the 18th in the large pepper tree
near the street just south of the tennis courts on North Kellogg Avenue in
Goleta. This is near San Jose Creek.
The FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCK was still at the Goleta Sewage Plant on Monday
the 13th. The plant is closed on weekends. Be sure to park by the office off
to your right and do not park by the ponds or work sheds. Please walk into
the office and sign in. Walk east down to the ponds and look for the bird
from the asphalt on the west side of the ponds. Do not walk on the berms.
In Carpinteria, an immature BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen on Saturday the 18th
along Carpinteria Creek below 6th Street. At the harbor seal rookery off
Bailard there were six SURFBIRDS, also on Saturday.
On Figueroa Mountain last weekend were four VESPER SPARROWS, three MOUNTAIN
QUAIL, and four GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS.
Highlights from the Cachuma Lake boat trips last week included an immature
BALD EAGLE, a GOLDEN EAGLE, and two WOOD DUCKS.
Two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS continue in Old La Purisima Mission Park on the
south side of Lompoc. Look in the blackberry bushes in the southeast corner
of the park. Both birds were seen today.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
