Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday,
August 25, 2005.
BEDFORD/SOMERSET COUNTY:
Allegheny Front Hawk Watch reported counting 1 OSPREY, 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS,
5 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 2 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 40
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 11 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS between
August 19 and 24 (JR, GF, NF, MMc, CM, MM, TB, RM).
CARBON COUNTY:
There were 6 CASPIAN TERNS at Beltzville State Park on August 18 (MS).
The following birds were seen at the Blue Mountain Ski Area on August 18 and
21; 6 BLACK VULTURES, 8 TURKEY VULTURE, 2 OSPREY, 2 BALD EAGLES, 1
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 4 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 4 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 3 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, 3 CHIMNEY SWIFTS, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, TREE SWALLOWS, BARN SWALLOWS,
1 CAROLINA WREN and 2 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES (RR).
CENTRE COUNTY:
A State College yard attracted 1 COOPER'S HAWK, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD,
BLUE JAYS, AMERICAN REDSTART, HOODED WARBLER and SCARLET TANAGER on August
17 and 18 (CA).
Birds seen at Scotia Barrens on August 19, 20 and 23 included WOOD DUCK,
MALLARD, PIED-BILLED GREBE, GREAT BLUE HERON, GREEN HERON, BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOO, WHITE-EYED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE,
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, CEDAR WAXWING, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, NORTHERN
PARULA, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH (RS,
JM).
A visit to Colyer Lake on August 21 found GREAT BLUE HERON, GREEN HERON,
KILLDEER, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER and
LEAST SANDPIPER (RS).
There was 1 LEAST SANDPIPER along Old Gatesburg Road on August 21 (RS).
Benner Springs Fish Hatchery yielded 1 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, 3 GREAT
BLUE HERONS, 2 GREAT EGRETS, 2 GREEN HERONS, 9 TURKEY VULTURES, 3 OSPREY, 1
BALD EAGLE, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 5 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS,
RED-EYED VIREOS, 2 COMMON RAVENS, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, CEDAR WAXWINGS and
EASTERN TOWHEE on August 21 and 24 (JM).
Young HOUSE WRENS were in a nest box and 1 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was seen
at a Pleasant Gap yard on August 21 and 22 (JL).
A COMMON RAVEN was seen at Beaver Stadium on August 23 (JL).
CLINTON COUNTY:
A GREAT EGRET was observed on August 20 at the lake in Kettle Creek State
Park (CR).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY;
Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch reported tabulating 6 OSPREY, 13 BALD EAGLES, 6
NORTHERN HARRIER, 18 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 5 COOPER'S HAWKS, 63 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, 17 RED-TAILED HAWK and 14 AMERICAN KESTRELS between August 18 and 24
(DG).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
There is a report of a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER being seen on August 19,
20, 22 and 23 along Holondel (or Honedel? - both spellings are in posts
about the sightings) Road south of Waynesboro (DB, DGe, BK, AM, CK, AT, DH).
A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen flying over the area as well on August 20 (AM, CK,
AT). Directions: From Greencastle and Interstate 81, take State Route 16
east to the town of Zullinger. Look for a John Deere Dealer and 84 Lumber.
Nearby will be Cold Spring Road (turn right) proceed approximately one mile
to a stop sign and Marsh Road (turn right at the stop sign). You will travel
approximately one mile. Turn onto Holondel Road and travel approximately ¼
mile. There will be a farm on the left and nearby will be a meadow marshy
area with thistles. The SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was initially observed
flying onto fence wiring and then flying back into cover.
A total of 4 EURASIAN-COLLARED DOVES were observed in the town of
Greencastle near the intersection of Allison and Madison streets on August
19 and 20 (BK, DGe). Three (3) additional EURASIAN-COLLARED DOVES were also
seen on August 19 at Shady Grove, about three miles from the first group
(BK, DGe).
There was 1 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER at Greencastle Reservoir on August 23 (DGe).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Birds seen at Conejohela Flats on August 18, 20, 21, 23 and 24 included up
to 15 WOOD DUCKS, 1 AMERICAN WIGEON, 7 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 2 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, 76 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 3 OSPREY, 2 adult and 6 immature BALD
EAGLES, 12 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 210 KILLDEER, 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 8
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 5 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 1 WHIMBREL, 3 RED KNOTS, 2
SANDERLINGS, 42 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 148 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 3 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 28 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 38 STILT
SANDPIPERS, 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, 3 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, WILSON'S SNIPE, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, 1 LAUGHING GULL,
12 CASPIAN TERNS, 1 COMMON TERN, 28 FORSTER'S TERNS, 4 BLACK TERNS, 6
EASTERN KINGBIRDS and 8 CEDAR WAXWINGS and (BS, JH, TR, AM, DH, CB).
Birds seen in Holtwood on August 22 included 2 EASTERN SCREECH OWLS,
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, DOWNY WOODPECKERS, HAIRY
WOODPECKERS, TREE SWALLOWS, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, CAROLINA
CHICKADEES, WOOD THRUSHES, NORTHERN CARDINALS and HOUSE FINCHES (JS).
LEBANON COUNTY:
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reports counting 5 OSPREY, 5 BALD EAGLES, 4
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 53 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 18 RED-TAILED
HAWKS, 5 AMERICAN KESTRELS and 1 MERLIN from August 18 to 23 (RP, BW, DSc,
GL).
MCKEAN COUNTY:
There were 4 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 2 GREEN HERONS, 2 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 1 AMERICAN ADVOCET, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 10 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 27 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 16 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 3 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 2 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER 1 RING-BILLED
GULL, 6 BELTED KINGFISHERS, 1 COMMON RAVEN, 1 CAROLINA WREN and 1 YELLOW
WARBLER at Redbridge on August 17, 18 and 20 (JF).
Birds found at the Bradford Sewage Treatment Ponds on August 17, 18 and 21
included 1 MERLIN, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 21 KILLDEER, 7 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, 6 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 9 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 1 probable
WESTERN SANDPIPER, 9 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 3 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER and 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (JF).
There were 4 KILLDEER and 1 LEAST SANDPIPER at Sugar Bay on August 20 (JF).
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE visited a Bradford yard on August 22 (JF).
MIFFLIN COUNTY:
Jacks Mountain Hawk Watch tabulated 2 OSPREY and 2 BALD EAGLES on August 18
(DS).
SCHUYLKILL/BERKS COUNTIES:
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary reported counting 20 OSPREY, 17 BALD EAGLES, 9
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 6 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 8 COOPER'S HAWKS, 113 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, 28 RED-TAILED HAWK, 27 AMERICAN KESTRELS and 1 MERLIN between August
18 and 24 (LG, DB).
SNYDER COUNTY:
A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was observed flying over Middleburg on the evening of
August 22 (MB).
WYOMING COUNTY:
There were 5 GREEN HERONS at a small pond off of Route 29 near Lake Carey on
August 20 (JKC).
YORK COUNTY:
A Hanover yard produced MOURNING DOVE, CHIMNEY SWIFT, RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, TREE
SWALLOWS, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, CAROLINA CHICKADEE, TUFTED
TITMOUSE, CAROLINA WREN, HERMIT THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD,
OVENBIRD, NORTHERN CARDINALS, COMMON GRACKLE, HOUSE FINCHES and AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES (BP).
An OVENBIRD was seen under the Pettigrew's feeders [in York?] on August 20
(AP).
