This is the weekly summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert, sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from area birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "highlights" section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's "Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

A RUFF (apparently an adult) was seen on the south side of the V-street
loop, just west of the residence that says Wallace on the mailbox. The bird
was actively foraging with a mixed flock of other shorebirds. Also present
on the V-street Loop were the 8 continuing GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. Two
EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL were on the mud flats off of Klopp Lake and 8
FORSTER'S TERNS were on the pilings there (Scott Carey).

At a private residence off of Cummings Road, in Eureka, 3 RED CROSSBILLS
came to a feeder (Tom Leskiw).

22 Mar.

In Orick, at the Rodeo Grounds, 2 SAY'S PHOEBES were present. On the 17TH OF
MARCH, the observer reported a hybrid GLAUCOUS X HERRING GULL at the mouth
of Redwood Creek (Jeff Allen fide Gary Lester).

23 Mar.

Five RUFFED GROUSE were seen on a trail off of Big Hill in Hoopa (Jim
Tietz).

24 Mar.

At Patrick's Point State Park, north of Trinidad, two (?) SAY'S PHOEBES were
seen (Ken Irwin).

At Hiller Park in McKinleyville 13 RED CROSSBILLS and one NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were seen. At the mouth of the Mad River 6
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 14 CASPIAN TERNS, 7 MARBLED MURRELETS, and 1 PIGEON
GUILLEMOT were seen. At the observers residence in McKinleyville 1
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and 1 SLATE-COLORED JUNCO continued. On the South
Spit of Humboldt Bay 1 PEREGRINE FALCON was seen (Kerry Ross).

25 Mar.

On the Arcata Marsh walk the following birds were of note: EURASIAN
GREEN-WINGED TEAL on the eastern island of Klopp Lake, 2 COMMON GOLDENEYES
on Gearheart Marsh, 2 BARN SWALLOWS, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT at the
southeastern corner of the Allen Marsh, and 1 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH at the
southwestern corner of the Allen Marsh (Jim Tietz).

On the V-street Loop in the Arcata Bottoms the 8 continuing GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 4 EURASIAN WIDGEONS, and 1 BARN SWALLOW was present.
At the Arcata Marsh 2 COMMON GOLDENEYES continued in the Gearheart Marsh, 1
CATTLE EGRET was in the field west of Gearheart Marsh, and 8 FORSTER'S TERNS
were present on pilings by Klopp Lake. At Tyee City on the Mad River 1
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW was present (Scott Carey).

26 Mar.

An immature PEREGRINE FALCON was at Lanphere Dunes (Jim Tietz); a SAY'S
PHOEBE was also seen (C. J. Ralph fide Jim Tietz).

At Shay Park in Arcata an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was present. At the Mad
River Fish Hatchery in Blue Lake 2 singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and a 2nd
year BALD EAGLE were present (Scott Carey).

An Audubon field trip to Fay Slough Wildlife Area took place today.
Highlights were: 1 adult BALD EAGLE and 2 SAY'S PHOEBES (on a private area
of the wildlife area; Pablo Herrera).

At a private residence at the base of Chezem road in Redwood Valley a male
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was at a feeder (Frank Anderson).
