Imperial Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
There were no reports from San Bernardino County this week.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Howard King reported on March 28 that the LITTLE GULL is still at Lake
Perris and can usually be seen from the east end of parking lot 12. He
also saw six HORNED GREBES on Lake Perris.

Roger Higson was excited about a real migration happening in Blythe. He
reported four SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, and 3 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS. He heard one BLACK RAIL and LESSER NIGHTHAWKS.

John Green reported on traveling south on I-215 towards French Valley from
Riverside, where he saw a small flock of probable SWAINSON’S HAWKS. He
definitely reported seeing three SWAINSON’S HAWKS and a BULLOCK’S ORIOLE
in the French Valley area.

IMPERIAL COUNTY

There were no reports this week from Imperial County, but for those
willing to venture a little further, Henry Detwiler reported three BLACK
RAILS calling on the north side of West Pond, as well as Clapper and
Virginia Rails. He also heard a number of LEAST BITTERN along Mittry Lake.
Mittry Lake and West Pond are in the Yuma, Arizona area.

Also out of the area, but of interest to birders, was a report of several
LONG-EARED OWLS and a female BARN OWL in the Anza Borrego area.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
