This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for
Thursday Mar 31, 2006 with reports of BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, ROSS'S
GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, LARK SPARROW, seasonal and
local reports of interest, and announcements.

Seven BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS continue near the farmhouse on West Supawna
Rd just north of the intersection of Freas Rd in Salem County through
Mar 28 (DeLorme P 60, H-13). Nearby, the LARK SPARROW was still
present near #23 Lighthouse Road (on the way to Supawna Meadows NWR)
Mar 28. The sparrow was seen on the ground near the dirt pile and
hedgerow and also about 75 yards further down the road. One to two
ROSS'S GEESE were among a large SNOW GOOSE flock that moves around
the Featherbed Lane/Pointers-Auburn Rd/Kings Highway area Mar 24-26.
A CACKLING GOOSE was among that flock Mar 25.

Reports from Sandy Hook this week included an AMERICAN BITTERN at
North Pond, 8 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, and 6+ AMERICAN WOODCOCKS
displaying at Gunnison Lot Mar 27, an early WILLET at Spermaceti Cove
Mar 26, and all three Scoter species off C-lot. A free, detailed
birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings
log there for daily reports.

A juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK was at Assunpink WMA Mar 25 just south of
the main parking lot on the lake; 15 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were in
the multiflora thickets opposite the bait & tackle shop the same day.

In Hunterdon County 31 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were noted at the
boat launch area of Spruce Run Reservoir Mar 26. Three LONG-TAILED
DUCKS were on Round Valley Reservoir Mar 27-28. A GREATER WHITE-
FRONTED GOOSE was reported along Rte 513 between Califon and Middle
Valley Mar 26.

The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continued this week at Garret Mountain
along the upper roadway near the horse stables; also there this week
were 2 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS and a COMMON RAVEN was at Rifle
Camp Park.

Montclair Hawk Watch recorded its earliest ever BROAD-WINGED HAWK on
the exceptional date of Mar 18.

A drake EURASIAN WIGEON and a COMMON MOORHEN highlighted birds at
Kearny Marsh East, Mar 27.

Reports from Liberty State Park this week included 2 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS, 13 HORNED GREBES, WILSON'S SNIPE, and FOX SPARROW.

Swartswood Lake in Sussex County Mar 25-26 hosted 10 REDHEADS, LONG-
TAILED DUCK, 3 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and 220 COMMON MERGANSERS.
Waterfowl noted on Culvers Lake Mar 25 included a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER
and 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS.

Sandy Hook Bird Observatory's annual Spring Migration Watch runs
daily through May 15. Birders are encouraged to visit anytime
between 9 am and 5 pm. Come by and see what's flying and say hello

New Jersey Audubon Society is currently recruiting volunteer
Grasslands Monitoring Associates for its Citizen Science Program.
Participants must have prior experience in grassland bird
identification and be able to visit their assigned sites/routes
approximately four times from May 1 through August 15. These surveys
are intended to determine the distribution and abundance of grassland
birds, and monitor the success of grassland habitat management
programs. Those interested in participating in the project should

New Jersey Audubon Society is currently recruiting volunteer
Pinelands Bird Survey Associates for its Citizen Science Program.
Participants must have prior experience in bird identification and be
familiar with the Pinelands. Pinelands Associates will be required
to make two visits to their assigned sites between May 20 and June
25, 2006. The purpose of these surveys is to determine the
distribution and abundance of birds in private and public lands in
the pinelands. Anyone interested in volunteering for this project or
