Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for March 30,
2006. This report covers the period from March 24th to March 30th and will be
updated on April 6th.
Three reports of PILEATED WOODPECKER this week. On the 25th, at the Lincoln
Woods State Park entrance in Lincoln, about 100 feet up the dirt path across
from the parking area there was a sighting, and on the 30th, a PILEATED
WOODPECKER was found at High Rock Farm off Scott Road in Cumberland. Also on the
30th, on was sighted in Chepachet, along with a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.
More reports of COMMON RAVEN in Rhode Island this week. This used to be a
very rare bird a few years ago, however they are making a startling push into
the area. One was seen in Scituate on the 25th, near the intersection of Route
6 and Route 101, and that same day one was seen in Hopkinton, over Long Pond.
A PINE WARBLER was seen at Long Pond on the 30th.
On the 24th at Genesse Swamp along the South County Bike Path in South
Kingstown, 18 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 EASTERN PHOEBE, 1 BELTED KINGFISHER, 1 GREAT BLUE
HERON, 2 WOOD DUCK and 1 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET. On the 30th, 1 WILSON'S
SNIPE, 1 EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 6 WOOD DUCK, 12 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 5 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER were found there. At the Great Swamp Management area, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER and 2 WILSON'S SNIPE were observed on the 30th.
At Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 1 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was seen on the
27th, and on the 30th a SNOWY EGRET was reported.
The first GREAT EGRET of the year were reported on the 30th. One at
Winnapaug Pond in Westerly, and one in Jamestown.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 27th, 90 BRANT, 7 COMMON EIDER, 4 BLACK
SCOTER, 20 SURF SCOTER, 5 COMMON LOON, 10 HORNED
GREBE, 5 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 8 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE,
18 SANDERLING, 29 PURPLE SANDPIPER, 55 DUNLIN and 3 HORNED LARK.
At ASRI's Fisherville Brook Refuge in Exeter, 10 RING-NECKED DUCK, 4
BUFFLEHEAD, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 TREE SWALLOW and 2
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH on the 29th.
Nine GLOSSY IBIS were reported flying over Middletown on the 29th.
At Third Beach restoration area also in Middletown, 3 PIPING PLOVER were
reported there on the 26th.
On the 26th at the East Providence Reservoir, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 14 GREAT
CORMORANT, 6 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 3 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 100 LESSER SCAUP, 63 RUDDY
DUCK, 3 AMERICAN COOT and 11 FISH CROW. At Watchemoket Cove in East
Providence, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL on the 25th.
A BALD EAGLE was reported in Middletown on the 27th, and one was seen in
Scituate on the 25th.
Finally, a BLACK VULTURE was reported from Exeter, and another one was
reported in Carolina this week.
