A breeding-plumage adult probable SLATY-BACKED GULL was found on the Bow
River by the Calgary Zoo south parking lot late afternoon on Tuesday March
28 by Brooke Clibbon and Eric Tull. Later that evening Bob Storms and Reid
Barclay watched a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.
Both birds were were re-seen the following morning at IBS by Ray Werschler,
CFNS group, and others. Also that morning (March 29) Ray saw an ICELAND GULL
at the zoo parking lot location. That same morning Mike Mulligan's CFNS
group watched an adult GLAUCOUS GULL, spotted by Jerry Pilny, at the Pearce
Estate weir. Ray also found a THAYER'S GULL the same day at the Sanctuary.
Jerry Pilny reported the first FRANKLIN'S GULL of the season, spotted March
27 at Frank Lake east of High River. A Franklin's was also seen at Inglewood
Bird Sanctuary on March 29 by Bill Wilson. This totals nine gull species
recorded on one day along the several-kilometre stretch of river from IBS to
the Zoo parking lot. (In addition to the species mentioned, Ring-billed,
California and Herring Gulls were noted.) Disscussion is ongoing regarding
ID of the Slaty-backed/Western Gull.
Jim Davis saw and heard a FOX SPARROW in his Douglasglen neighbourhood of
Calgary the evening of March 28. Terry Korolyk reported one EURASIAN WIGEON
seen off the dam at Pine Coulee Reservoir by Willow Creek on March 27. He
also found a male SNOWY OWL east of Langdon Reservoir on Hwy 22X the same
day.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert will be Monday April 3.
