This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for April 3, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Yellow
Grosbeak, Rusty Blackbird, Glossy Ibis, Little and Heermann’s Gulls.
There have been very few reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, Clark's Nutcrackers, and Pine Grosbeaks.

In San Juan County:
SW reported an amazing 435 TURKEY VULTURES over Bloomfield on March 26.
JJR on March 27 reported a first for the county, CURVE-BILLED THRASTHER at
the home of WSM in Aztec.

In Colfax County:
At Sugarite State Park near Raton on April 1 DC found six LEWIS’S
WOODPECKERS, a DIPPER, and three BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES. Two more woodpeckers were
along NM 72 at mile marker 7 in Yankee and four more were in Yankee Canyon.
At Springer Lake on April 1 there were four FRANKLIN’S and five BONAPARTE’S
GULLS.
DC on March 31 on French Lake east of Cimarron on NM 58 saw a TUNDRA SWAN.
He had seven BALD EAGLES and two CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS at Eagle Nest
Lake on March 30.
At the Maxwell Refuge on A5 just north of the junction with A1 on March 26
DC found three LONG-EARED OWLS and a BARN OWL.
DC saw 15 WHITE PELICANS on Lake 12 on the Maxwell Refuge March 24.

In Quay County:
DC on March 25 at Ute Lake saw six COMMON LOONS (four in breeding plumage),
threer HORNED GREBES, a SNOWY PLOVER, 12 BOBWHITES, and at least one
vocalizing RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

In Cibola County:
BN and CR on March 5 saw many PINYON JAYS in the western Zuni Mts. from the
El Malpais NM to Bluewater Canyon.

In Bernalillo County:
The YELLOW GROSBEAK has been at 1412 Las Lomas NE in Albuquerque near the
UNM campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and
two stoplights north of Central. (There are two Lomas Streets). Turn west
onto Las Lomas, it is at backyard feeders. Many have viewed it through March
30 (by BK). Few reports have been received lately, by the way.
BV had two CACTUS WRENS in Embudo Canyon on the west side of the Sandias on
March 19 about a half mile west of the water tank in chollas.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque NC says they banded a red FOX
SPARROW on March 18. BV on March 26 again saw a red FOX SPARROW at the
green feeder from the viewing pond.
At the Crest House feeders on Sandia Crest SNC say the ROSY FINCHES, mostly
BLACKS, were still present on March 25. The banding team by March 25 have
banded a total this winter of 298, including 221 Blacks, 44 BROWN-CAPPED and 33
GRAY-CROWNED. From reports apparently many have already left. HK saw none
on the afternoon of March 28. SNC bande no new ones on April 2 but had 30
repeats. No unbanded birds were seen.

In Valencia county;
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen WW on March 20 had 38
BLACK-NECKED STILTS. BN and CR had a SNOWY EGRET on March 19. JP amd JO found the
snowy egret, many stilts, and a BURROWING OWL on March 25. And on March 28 KSo
saw 17 stilts and a TUNDRA SWAN, with the owl in the field across from the
Taco Bell across the highway.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio SSA and MLA had an adult LITTLE
GULL on April 1 later seen by JO. JO and JNM found it gone on April 2, but
JO and MH found a GLOSSY IBIS on the Farm loop. JP and JO had the
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the visitor center on March 30, and MH reports the
HARRIS’S
SPARROW was still there on April 2. CCBr had 70 WHITE PELICANS flying over on
March 26. CP saw 26 pelicans at the blind on March 26. MH reported a
YELLOW Warbler on April 2.
JP and JO on March 25 took Otero Road east from the main street (California)
in Socorro to where the pavement ends at the Low Flow Channel. Turning
south on a dirt road they found two TUNDRA SWANS.
In the area of A127 north of US 380 16 miles east of San Antonio on March 25
JO and JP found a SPRAGUE’S PIPIT still present near the cattle guard at the
left fork. Also seen was a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW.
On the Farm-to-Market road just off 380 east of San Antonio in a flooded
field JO and JP saw twO LONG-BILLED CURLEWS and two LESSER YELLOWLEGS. KSo
found 76 curlews on March 28. MH on March 29 found 20 SWAINSON’S HAWKS, a hybrid
BLUE-WINGED x CINNAMON TEAL, 3o curlews and two yellowlegs. JO had 24 of
the hawks on April 1.
Jhi on March 26 at the golf course on the NMTU campus in Socorro north of
the Turtle Bay ponds had an Eastern Phoebe.

In Sierra County:
At Riverside Park below Caballo Dam on March 18 JP found the ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER was still present.

In Grant County:
SOW got a photo from JT on March 28 taken on I-10 at mile marker 53 at the
eastbound rest stop of a second year HEERMANN’S GULL molting into adult
plumage.
MF saw a ZONE-TAILED HAWK a
over Mangas Springs on March 18 and EW had another on March 17 over the Gila
Bird Farm, the same day RS reported the first BLACK HAWK there. RS also had
a red FOX SPARROW there on March 24.
PT on March 20 at her Silver City home had a BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD with
a BROAD-TAILED on March 20-21 ‘dancing’.

In Hidalgo County:
JN on March 25 had calling POORWILLS and a PAINTED REDSTART in Clanton
Canyon.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.

In Luna County:
On March 18 CL had a BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD and a VERMILION FLYCATCHER in
Pecan Park in Deming.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to a
year for construction.

In Dona Ana County:
In Mesilla Park on March 29 JN had 85 TURKEY VULTURES flying over. He had
had up to ten MYRTLE WARBLERS on March 28-29.
JN on March 13 had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE along the arroyo that crosses
Univerity Ave. about a quarter mile north of its intersection with Avenida de
Mesilla. CL saw it March 15.
At the Old Refuge (Mesilla Valley Bosque Park) south of Mesilla. CCBr
reported a PERRGRINE FALLCON on March 28. CCBr had sn OSPREY on March 29.
CCBr had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW singing in their yard on March 29.
JZ ans MS had a female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at their home near Radium Springs
on March 16. On March 25 there was a Rufous male and a BLACK-CHINNED present.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.

In Eddy County:
SW had an early HOODED ORIOLE female at his feeder in Carlsbad on March 31.

Field Trips:

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On Appril 6 the trip os to the Taco Bell Marsh in Belen; April 13 to
Bosque del Apache, April 20 to the trail at Embudito Canyon; and on April 27 to
Roger Hoppe’s home in Sandia Heights.

On the weekend of April 7 to 9 Sangre de Cristo Audubon will go to a
Prairie Chicken lek at Milnesand. Contactis Dawn Davis at 762-5127 or for info on
the lek trip.

On Saturday, April 15 Southwest Audubon will go to Katfish Kove in Luna Co.
Trip leaders are Larry Malone and David Beatty at 534-1450.

On the weekend of April 22-23 Central will tour to Bitter Lake Refuge amd
Rattlenake Springs led by Sei Tokuda. They will spend the night in Carlsbad.

And on April 22-23 Mesilla Valley Audubon will also be at Rattlesnake
Springs and the Carlsbad area, the Salt Lakes, or Sitting Bull Falls, and the

On Sunday, April 23 Sangre de Cristo will go to the migrant trap near

The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe has nature walks on the grounds
