This is the weekly summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert, sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from area birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "highlights" section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's "Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

In southern Humboldt county, about a mile below the Benbow dam, 5-6
WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS were reported. The observer stated that he did not
find any Swifts at the spot where they were first discovered in Humboldt
county during the breeding bird atlas project. The observer also had their
first singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER of the year on the same trail (Jay
Sooter).

At a private residence, on Azalea Hill in McKinleyville, a CHIPPING SPARROW
was seen (Gary Lester).

At the Arcata Marsh a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen flying over Klopp Lake,
heading west towards the Mad River Slough wildlife area. A PALM WARBLER was
seen at the southwest corner of the Allen Marsh (Elias Elias).
In Freshwater a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen at 104 Freshwater Road (Rob
Hewitt).
At King Salmon, on Humboldt Bay, 10-15 RED-NECKED GREBES and 1 albino BRANT
were seen (Chris Tonra).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY, 1 DUSKY CANADA GOOSE was seen at the end of Serina Road
in the Smith River Bottoms. Nine CASPIAN TERNS were seen on the Smith River
(Owen Head).
At 185 Golf Course Drive in Bayside, 5 WOOD DUCKS were seen (Christine
Hile).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY 3 BLACK SCOTERS were seen near Castle Rock, in Crescent
City. One PEREGRINE FALCON and BALD EAGLE were seen at the Alexandre Dairy,
in the Smith River Bottoms and 1 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen off of Church
Tree Road (Rob Hewitt).
1 Apr.

At the Arcata Marsh, 1 SAY'S PHOEBE and 1 PALM WARBLER were seen off of
I-street (No name).
On the North Jetty 2 ROCK SANDPIPERS and 15 MARBLED MURRELETS were seen,
along with 2 SELASPHOROUS HUMMINGBIRDS that flew in from the ocean (Scott
Carey).
2 Apr.

At Freshwater Lagoon, south of Orick, 5 OSPREY were seen (Chet Ogan).
At the Arcata Marsh 1 RED KNOT was seen on the middle island of Klopp Lake.
One MERLIN, 5 WHIMBREL and 1 LONG-BILLED CURLEW were seen at the Redwood
Creek Estuary, near Orick. At Stone Lagoon, north of Trinidad, 3
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen (Scott Carey).
