Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex
(MWC)

SANDHILL CRANES were reported again from Carncross Rd. in the Town
of Savannah. A Bird was heard vocalizing on March 27th and the pair was
seen in flight on March 29th. The pair is likely the same Sandhill
Cranes that nest in the MWC. Check the cut corn field along the south
side of Carncross Rd., or try to find the Cranes by scanning from the
DEC Parking Area at the end of Morgan Rd. Sandhill Cranes can be tricky
to locate, a few attempts may be necessary. Refer to page 74, Grid D1
in the NYS DeLorme.

At least one LAPLAND LONGSPUR was identified flying with a group of
Horned Larks and calling in the Savannah Mucklands area of the Montezuma
Wetlands Complex (MWC) on April 2nd. On the 31st, a single alternate
plumage bird was observed flushing off a roadside. In both cases, no
specific geographic area was mentioned, but sightings might be obtained
by scoping from behind the Potatoes Building on NY-31, or from the
pullout just after you cross the green bridge on NY-31. The Potatoes
building will be quite obvious if traveling westbound from the Village
of Montezuma. After crossing a green bridge over the Erie Canal and
leaving Cayuga County, look for the Potatoes Building (the only
structure for miles) up ahead on the right. This area is in Seneca
County, DeLorme page 74, quadrant D1.

An EURASIAN WIGEON was located among the Waterfowl in Tschache Pool
on March 29th and again on April 1st. Tschache Pool is accessed from
NY-89 just after passing the exit from the Wildlife Drive and crossing
over the Thruway, on the west side of NY-89. Climb the tower and scope
the Ducks. Refer to page 73 Grid D7. at the very bottom corner of the
DeLorme.

An adult NORTHERN SHRIKE was reported up until March 31st from the Three
Rivers Wildlife Management Area north of Baldwinsville on 60 Rd. See page
74 in the DeLorme. Also in the 3-Rivers area, American Woodcocks are
back on territory. Try listening for the flight of the Timberdoodle at
dusk from the lots along Kellogg Rd., north or south of Smokey Hollow
Rd., or on Potter Rd. east of 60 Rd. Refer to page 74 in the Delorme NY
State Atlas and Gazetteer.

The PEREGRINE FALCON that has been seen atop the 20th floor of State
Tower Building at 109 South Warren Street in the City of Syracuse is
currently in the nestbox platform at the time of writing this report.
On March 30th, the female drastically changed her behavior, and began
huddling inside the box constantly, instead of coming and going in and
out. This likely indicates eggs have been laid. A pair of Falcons have
nested here for the past two years, and utilize a nestbox/platform. A
webcam allows viewers to observe the Falcons while nesting. Refer to
the following URL:

A search of Onondaga Audubon's Noyes Sanctuary found a LONG-EARED
OWL on April 1st. For directions, see:

http://www.onondagaaudubon.org/noyes.html

Refer to page 82 in the DeLorme.

Excellent numbers of Raptors were recorded this past week for Derby
Hill Bird Observatory's annual Hawk Watch as a result of a strong push
of very warm air on the 30th and 31st. Refer to the following URL for
directions, daily observations, and flight predictions:

http://www.derbyhill.org

On the 29th, several groups of PINE SISKINS were noted. See the Derby
Hill website for a full tally of Hawks observed. Directions to Derby
Hill can be found at the website, the Hill is located on DeLorme page 83.

Gull Reports from Phoenix this week mention a GLAUCOUS GULL on the 29th
lingering with the Ring-bills and Herring Gulls. The Water control
structure is closed, vastly reducing Gull numbers. Refer to page 74 in
the Delorme NY State Atlas and Gazetteer.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found along the intersection of
County Route 54 and Swamp Road, just north of
Elvic Farms in the Town of Schroeppel near Pennellville, on the 30th.
See page 75 in the NYS DeLorme Atlas.
