This alert was updated on Thursday, August 25,
2005 with highlights that include: 24 species of
shorebirds including BUFF-BREASTED, STILT, and a
very early PURPLE SANDPIPER, a northerly breeding
record for RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, along with
ORCHARD ORIOLE, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, and migrants.
A continuing onshore flow on Saturday produced
fog, drizzle, and more cool temperatures ahead of
a warm front that evening. Showers developed
ahead of the front, with more showers on Sunday
before being cleared out by the passage of a cold
front. Monday and Tuesday were beautiful days.
Their clear, cool, nights with light breezes
helped migrants move along, especially after the
poorer weather of the previous nights. A weak
system on Wednesday produced clouds and showers
into the evening, and temperatures remained cooler
than normal for all but one day this week (for a
change).
3 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were off of Ocean Avenue
in Biddeford Pool on the 21st, while a pair of
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were flying north past Two
Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on the 24th.
>From a whale watching boat out of Portland on the
20th, a birder spotted 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER, 3 MANX
SHEARWATERS, along with "many" GREATER SHEARWATERS
and WILSON'S STORM PETRELS. At least 50 Wilson's
Storm Petrels were off of the East Point Sanctuary
in Biddeford Pool on the 21st.
An impressive concentration of wading birds off of
the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh
on the 20th included 45 GREAT EGRETS, 120+ SNOWY
EGRETS, and 30 LITTLE BLUE HERONS.
Very high tides this week due to the full moon and
onshore winds, concentrated roosting shorebirds.
One such concentration was on the rocks at the
north end of Biddeford Pool Beach, before it moved
to rocks off of Ocean Avenue, on 8/21. This group
included an estimated 400 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS,
150 SANDERLING, and 1500 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.
Observers sifting through the flock also tallied
10+ WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and an extremely early
PURPLE SANDPIPER, still in breeding plumage.
Single AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were seen along
Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh on the 18th and
at Wharton Point, Brunswick (Delorme Map 6: C-3)
on the 20th.
5 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were on Hill's Beach in
Biddeford at low tide on the 21st.
At least two UPLAND SANDPIPERS were still on the
Kennebunk Plains on the 21st. Two RED KNOTS were
on Hill's Beach on the 22nd while the 30
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS in the salt pannes on the
east side of the north end of Eastern Road in
Scarborough Marsh on the 20th was a very good
count. Meanwhile, four STILT SANDPIPERS were
reported from Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh on
the 18th and 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were on
Hill's Beach in Biddeford on the 20th.
High counts of other shorebirds this week
included:
91 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (Reid State Park,
Georgetown, 8/22); 2 PIPING PLOVER (Popham Beach
State Park, Phippsburg, 8/19); 51 KILLDEER
(Mayhall Road sod farms, Gray, Delorme Map 5: B-4,
8/21); 16 GREATER YELLOWLEGS (Back Cove, Portland,
8/20); 15 LESSER YELLOWLEGS (Eastern Road,
Scarborough Marsh, 8/20); 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS
(Westbrook Skating Rink Pond, off Routes 208/9,
Biddeford, 8/21); 5 WILLETS (Fort Popham,
Phippsburg, 8/19); 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS (Biddeford
Pool Beach, 8/21); 12 WHIMBREL (behind Hattie's
Deli, Biddeford Pool, 8/19); 29 RUDDY TURNSTONE
(Hill's Beach, Biddeford, 8/21); 75 LEAST
SANDPIPER, (Westbrook Skating Rink Pond,
Biddeford, 8/21); 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPER (Eastern
Road, Scarborough Marsh, 8/20); and 38
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS (Hill's Beach, Biddeford,
8/21).
20+ COMMON NIGHTHAWKS passed over a Cumberland
yard on the 22nd.
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were definitely on the
move this week. Observers reported an increase in
numbers of birds and frequency of visits at
feeders throughout the area this week, and at
least 10 were tallied flying past Kettle Cove and
Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth on the
24th.
A juvenile RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was observed at
a feeder in Monmouth, Kennebec County on the 19th.
The adults were holdovers from last fall's
irruption, and this breeding record likely
establishes the northernmost breeding record for
Red-bellied Woodpeckers for the state.
A single YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was at Sandy
Point Beach on Cousin's Island in Yarmouth on the
25th and another was in a Falmouth yard the same
day, along with one OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER.
One CAROLINA WREN was heard singing in the
Biddeford Pool neighborhood on 8/21.
Warbler migration is well underway. A BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER dropped into a Windham yard on the 24th,
while 4 CANADA WARBLERS were among other species
in a Freeport yard on the 18th. After light
northwesterly winds overnight, 250+ warblers were
tallied passing Sandy Point Beach in Yarmouth on
the 25th. Most were "unidentified pre-sunrise
silhouettes," but of those identified, 66+
AMERICAN REDSTARTS led the way. The 10 species of
warblers recorded there also included 3 NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH and 1 WILSON'S WARBLER. The same
morning, a Falmouth yard also hosted ten species
including PRAIRIE and TENNESSEE.
A female ORCHARD ORIOLE stopped by East Point
Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool on the 21st.
