A juvenile STILT SANDPIPER was on the LA River just north of the 405 Freeway
on August 24. Park on 34th Street just south of Wardlow Road to access the
river here. The 405 Freeway is just north of here. On August 25 the bird
was still present just below the Metro Blue Line crossing south of Wardlow.
A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was along the Los Angeles River between the Willow
and Wardlow Street crossings on August 23 and 24. Several BAIRD'S
SANDPIPERS have been seen near Wardlow Street for most of the week.
On the Oxnard Plain in Ventura County, another SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was at
Revolon Slough just south of Laguna Road on August 21.
At the Santa Clara River Estuary in Ventura, five BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were
seen above the bridge on August 22. The lagoon is slowly filling with
water, but good shorebird habitat remains and is attracting many shorebirds.
At Hansen Dam near Sylmar, a LUCY'S WARBLER was at the west edge of the
willow forest on August 20. The willow forest can be reached by taking the
Dronfield entrance into Hansen Dam Recreation area and parking in the lower
parking lot.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
