Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Saturday, April 1, Kyri Freeman reported a female-type Selasphorus
hummingbird, probably a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Apple Valley. The following
day the report continued from a hike about ten miles out of Black Rock
Campground. There were multiple sightings of SCOTT’S ORIOLES, as well as a
number of other expected birds.

April 1, John Green reported from the Adelanto area on seeing two SAGE
THRASHERS, and a SWAINSON’S HAWK.

Steve Sosensky reported from the East Mojave Preserve near the
intersection of Black Canyon Rd. and Wild Horse Canyon Rd. He spotted
BENDIRE’S THRASHERS, LE CONTE’S THRASHERS and a family of BLACK-THROATED
SPARROW. He also heard one JUNIPER TITMOUSE and saw two PINYON JAYS. Steve
also had a GILDED FLICKER fly over as he descended Cedar Canyon Rd.
towards Cima-Kelso Rd. A couple hundred yards farther down the hill, he
and his group flushed a PRAIRIE FALCON off the fence on the south side of
the road.

April 2, two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were observed and photographed feeding
in a back yard at a private residence in Redlands.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Roger Higson made several reports this week. His reports included
sightings of several hummingbirds at his feeders, including 2 BROAD-TAILED
HUMMINGBIRDS, about a half dozen BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRDS, 5 ANNA’S
HUMMINGBIRDS, 2 COSTA’S HUMMINGBIRDS, and 2 RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS. A later
report noted at least 6 SWAINSON’S HAWKS, lots of CHIPPING SPARROWS, WHITE-
CROWNED SPARROWS, and BREWER’S SPARROWS, 3 BUFFLEHEAD, 27 RING-NECKED
DUCKS, a distant view of a FERRUGINOUS HAWK, BENDIRE’S THRASHER, 2 SAGE
THRASHERS, and 4 singing CRISSAL THRASHERS. He also spotted 5 LUCY’S
WARBLERS, a BELL’S VIREO, and a CEDAR WAXWING.

Madeline Bauer continues to report the MERLIN in Mira Loma at 66th and
William. To reach this spot, take the I-15 to Limonite. Take Limonite east
to Etiwanda, south to 66th (an “L” intersection), west for 3 blocks to
William, and then west to Lucretia. Madeline also reported there was a
BENDIRE’S THRASHER in the Gila Woodpecker cage at the Living Desert. It
was unknown whether the bird was a captive or ventured in on in his own.

Chet McGaugh reported from Desert Center on March 30, where he spotted a
male LAZULI BUNTING. He noted that regional records for this bird before
April are few or none. He also saw abundant HOODED ORIOLES and BULLOCK’S
ORIOLES, and 2 LUCY’S WARBLERS. BREWER’S SPARROWS were heard in the
oleander bushes.

John Green reported on the re-sighting of a GRAY FLYCATCHER in his yard.
The bird had not been seen since February 2. John also had his first BLACK-
HEADED GROSBEAK of the spring.

Larry LaPre reported seeing 2 BELL’S VIREOS along the creek trail at the
Rubidoux Nature Center.
