This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for
Thursday April 6, 2006 with report of BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, "Black"
BRANT, "Common" GREEN-WINGED TEAL, LITTLE GULL, LARK SPARROW,
seasonal and local reports of interest and announcements.

At least three BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were still present at the farm
along West Supawna Rd just north of the intersection of Supawna &
Freas Rd in Salem County Apr 2 (DeLorme P. 60, H-13). The LARK
SPARROW was present Mar 31 along nearby # 23 Lighthouse Rd.

Three LITTLE GULLS were among 300 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Spruce Run
Reservoir Apr 3 during stormy weather, visible from the fishing pier,
which is the first access/parking area on the right after entering
the state park's main entrance from Van Syckles Ave. Also at Spruce
Run were 16 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and 8 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED
SWALLOWS. At Round Valley Reservoir Apr 3 were 8 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS, 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, and 2 HORNED GREBES.

Garret Mountain continues to host the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER near the
horse stables on the upper roadway and a COMMON RAVEN was there Apr
3. Other birds noted at Garret this week were WILD TURKEY, PILEATED
WOODPECKER, WINTER WREN, 15+ BROWN CREEPERS, 3 PALM WARBLERS, FOX
SPARROW, and 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. Also in Passaic County at the Walker
Ave Wetlands this week was an adult LITTLE BLUE HERON and 18 WILSON'S
SNIPE.

The Allendale Celery Farm hosted an AMERICAN BITTERN, RED-SHOULDERED
HAWK, 18+ WILSON'S SNIPE, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, BARN
SWALLOW, FOX SPARROW, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD this week.

Great Swamp NWR Apr 1 had 2 BROWN THRASHERS, YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER, and 4 PINE WARBLERS.

An immature GLAUCOUS GULL was among 150 gulls at the Sussex County
Landfill Apr 3. Also in Sussex County this week was a drake REDHEAD
at the Liberty Loop Impoundments at Wallkill River NWR.

Sandy Hook reports this week included 8 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 20 SURF
SCOTERS, 10 BLACK SCOTERS off C-lot, 7 BLACK VULTURES, a subadult
BALD EAGLE, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and PIPING PLOVER at the end of
the fisherman's trail Apr 1. An AMERICAN PIPIT was over the hawkwatch
Apr 4 and 80 AMERICAN KESTRELS were tallied there that day. A free,

At least one BLACK BRANT was sighted at South Amboy Waterfront Park
Apr 5. For more information about birding this site see

Barnegat Light State Park had 30+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS, COMMON EIDER,
ICELAND GULL, 2 RED KNOTS, and PURPLE SANDPIPERS Apr 2.

Manahawkin WMA Apr 5 had a "Common" GREEN-WINGED TEAL (a.k.a.
"Eurasian Teal"), 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, and
LEAST SANDPIPER.

Northern Fulmar, late alcids, gulls, and early northbound seabird

Sandy Hook Bird Observatory's annual Spring Migration Watch runs
daily through May 15. Birders are encouraged to visit anytime between
9 am and 5 pm. Come by and see what's flying and say hello to this

New Jersey Audubon Society is currently recruiting volunteer
Grasslands Monitoring Associates for its Citizen Science Program.
Participants must have prior experience in grassland bird
identification and be able to visit their assigned sites/routes
approximately four times from May 1 through August 15. These surveys
are intended to determine the distribution and abundance of grassland
birds, and monitor the success of grassland habitat management
programs. Those interested in participating in the project should

New Jersey Audubon Society is currently recruiting volunteer
Pinelands Bird Survey Associates for its Citizen Science Program.
Participants must have prior experience in bird identification and be
familiar with the Pinelands. Pinelands Associates will be required to
make two visits to their assigned sites between May 20 and June 25,
2006. The purpose of these surveys is to determine the distribution
and abundance of birds in private and public lands in the pinelands.
