WESTERN KINGBIRDS are indeed living up to their name as there were two
reports this week of the species west of its normal range. On Tuesday August
23 Shonna McLeod reported a Western Kingbird in her yard in the Braeside
community of Calgary, and on the same day Mike Mulligan saw one at Inglewood
Bird Sanctuary, Calgary. On August 6 a Western was seen in the Millrise
community of Calgary. This is the third successive August this bird has
shown up at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.

A wandering HUMMINGBIRD was seen in the Southview district of Calgary on
Sunday August 21. Carol Coulter observed the bird in her yard (species
unknown).

Warbler reports this week include a PALM WARBLER seen at Inglewood Bird
Sanctuary on Monday August 22. The bird was seen by Colin Young and Linda
Bailey at 2pm with other warblers at the junction of the Visitors Centre
path and the main path along the lagoon.

There have been recent reports of MARBLED GODWIT flocks east of Calgary.
Terry Korolyk observed flocks of 85 and 55 birds in the Irricana Slough on
Sunday August 21, and Mary Coughlin found a flock of 45 birds along Hwy 817
12 km south of Strathmore on Monday August 22.

Falcons reported recently include a PRAIRIE FALCON seen along Hwy 9 on
August 22 by Mary Coughlin. For details call Mary at 275-9651. At Least two
PEREGRINE FALCONS were at the University of Calgary Friday August 19. One
bird was perched atop the MacKimmie Library tower, the other perched on a
sign half way down the tower.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday August 29.
