Highlights
Two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were in the Pine Point Narrows off of Pine Point
in Scarborough on April 6.
A singing SEASIDE SPARROW was viewed at Bayview Preserve in Yarmouth on
Friday, April 7.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen soaring over South Shore Drive in Rangeley
Plantation on April 2, about 2.5 miles west of Rte 4.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen with 9 CANADA GEESE on Puddledock
Pond in Fort Fairfield.
SONG and FOX SPARROWS, TREE SWALLOWS, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPCUCKERS were
widely reported this week along with EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and EASTERN PHOEBES.
PALM WARBLERS were reported in several areas.
York County
HARLEQUIN DUCKS are still being seen at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. One
AMERICAN COOT was seen in Moody Marsh in Ogunquit.
TREE SWALLOWS were seen in West Kennebunk.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in Saco on April 3. At Laurel Hill
Cemetery in Saco on April 2 there were 1 OSPREY, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, and 1
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK. An early ROUGH WINGED SWALLOW was over the water at the
Saco Yacht Club, along with TREE SWALLLOWS and 1 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET.
A male REDHEAD was on the pond between the retreat center and the public
beach at Biddeford Pool.
Birds at the Sanford Sewage Treatment facility include 1 LESSER SCAUP, 2
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 LEAST SANDPIPER, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and 1 AMERICAN
PIPIT.
Scarborough Marsh Area
A MERLIN was seen at Higgins Beach in Scarborough.
Two SNOWY EGRETS were at Dunstan Landing in Scarborough on April 1, and 3
GREAT EGRETS were seen on April 2.
A LAUGHING GULL was seen over Route One in Scarborough.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was viewed at the Scarborough Industrial Park on
April 1.
Eight SNOW GEESE, GREAT and SNOWY EGRETS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and GLOSSY IBIS
were in Scarborough Marsh near the Audubon Center.
A GADWALL was seen behind Pelreco, off of Route 9 along with GREAT and SNOWY
EGRETS, GREAT BLUE HERON, GLOSSY IBIS, and an AMERICAN WOODCOCK.
A PINE WARBLER appeared at a feeder opposite Second Avenue on April 5.
One GLOSSY IBIS was seen at Winnock's neck on April 4.
On Eastern Road in Scarborough there were 2 TREE SWALLOWS, 1 FISH CROW, 1
NORTHERN SHRIKE, 7 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 9 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and 1 NORTHERN
HARRIER.
An OSPREY was perched near Anjon's Restaurant on Route 1.
Two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were in the Pine Point Narrows off of Pine Point
in Scarborough on April 6.
Greater Portland and Western Maine
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS were seen in Cape Elizabeth, and more than 36 BRANT
were at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth on April 6. A RING-NECKED PHEASANT was
seen in the Spurwink Marsh area and a FIELD SPARROW at Two Lights State
Park.
A RED-THROATED LOON and an ICELAND GULL were seen along the Eastern
promenade in Portland on April 1. On March 31, on the Eastern Promenade were
a single basic-plumaged RUDDY DUCK and 2 GREATER SCAUP. A GRAY CATBIRD
continued on the hillside. At Evergreen Cemetery in Portland there were
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 1 WINTER WREN, NORTHERN FLICKERS, EASTERN PHOEBES,
TREE SWALLOW, and BELTED KINGFISHER. A GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER was at
Evergreen on April 7, and a WILSON'S SNIPE was in the marsh along Capisic
Brook in Capisic Pond Park.
A singing SEASIDE SPARROW was viewed at Bayview Preserve in Yarmouth on
Friday, April 7. (Bayview Preserve is located off of Bayview Road in
Yarmouth, Delorme Map 6: D-1). When you enter the preserve, take the trail
to the right of the kiosk. Enter the woods, and follow the trail as it
borders the marsh from above a steep hillside. Near where the trail turns
right to parallel the river, head down the hill into the marsh. The sparrow
was in an island of cattails within the spartina patens marsh. It usually
stayed within this cattail patch but occasionally flew into the marsh.
Two GREATER SCAUP were seen on the Mackworth Island Causeway in Falmouth.
Birds at Florida Lake on Route 125 in Freeport this week included 4 NORTHERN
PINTAILS, WOOD DUCKS, PIED-BILLED GREBES, COMMON MERGANSERS, COMMON
GOLDENEYES, AMERICAN COOTS, BELTED KINGFISHER, HERMIT THRUSH, and 1 WINTER
WREN.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER was on Bonney Eagle Pond in Buxton on April 1.
A TURKEY VULTURE, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and a FOX SPARROW were spotted in
Bridgton on March 30, and on March 31 there were SONG SPARROW, EASTERN
PHOEBE, and PINE SISKINS.
Two YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS were in South Hiram on April 2, and TREE
SWALLOWS on April 1. Also seen in the area were 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS and 3
FOX SPARROWS.
A TREE SWALLOW and a female AMERICAN KESTREL were first reported on the Saco
Intervale in Fryeburg April 1.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen soaring over South Shore Drive in Rangeley
Plantation on April 2, about 2.5 miles west of Rte 4. A BOREAL CHICKADEE and
FOX SPARROW are coming to feeders in Sandy River Plantation, about 7 miles
south of Rangeley.
On the northwest side of Moosehead Lake there were 20 COMMON REDPOLLS, 1
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 1 PINE GROSBEAK, and 2 GRAY JAYS.
Midcoast
Two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, a NORTHERN FLICKER, and a GREAT BLUE HERON were seen
in Topsham on April 1. The first PALM WARBLER appeared on the banks of the
Androscoggin River in Topsham on April 5.
Two OSPREYS were seen on a pole near an old nest on Route 1 just south of
Bath on April 2, and an EASTERN MEADOWLARK was singing in front of Bath YMCA
on April 6.
At Reid State Park in Georgetown there were 4 PIPING PLOVERS, 1 GREAT BLUE
HERON, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL, and 1 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT on April 5. At
Maine Audubon's Josephine Newman Sanctuary also in Georgetown there were 2
BARRED OWLS and an AMERICAN WOODCOCK.
Four TURKEY VULTUES were in Damariscotta.
Forty-two RED-NECKED GREBES, 12 HORNED GREBES, and a GREAT CORMORANT were at
Pemaquid Point.
On Monhegan Island there were KILDEER, COLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, EASTERN
PHOEBES, FOX and SONG SPARROWS, BROWN CREEPER, many NORTHERN FLICKERS, and 2
BALD EAGLES.
Three BARROW'S GOLDENEYES remain in the river in Warren village, along with
several DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS. A pair of GREATER SCAUP were in the golf
course pond at Samoset Resort for several days. Elsewhere in Warren EVENING
GROSBEAKS were coming to a feeder.
A COMMON LOON was seen on freshwater in Morrill on Route 3 on March 31.
A PINE WARBLER was foraging under feeders in North Haven on April 6.
At the Weskeag Marsh in South Thomaston were 4 AMERICAN WIGEON, GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 10 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL,
2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 KILDEER, and 1 EASTERN PHOEBE on April 2 and 3.
Central Maine
A HOUSE WREN was singing in a yard in Lewiston.
In Richmond there were 30 SONG SPARROWS, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 1
EASTERN PHOEBE, 1 TREE SWALLOW, and 3-4 BARRED OWLS calling on April 1.
Birds seen in a yard in north Augusta on April 1 included 1 RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET, 40 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, 1 PURPLE FINCH, 10 SONG SPARROWS, 3 FOX
SPARROWS, and 1 COOPER'S HAWK. On April 3 there were 3 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS, 1 CHIPPING SPARROW, 5 FOX SPARROWS, 20 DARD-EYED JUNCOS, and on
April 4 there was a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. An EASTERN TOWHEE was singing
by the north end of the parking lot at Central Maine Commerce Center in
Augusta.
At the Messalonskee Lake outlet along Route 27 on April 1 there were 42
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 40 HOODED MERGANSERS, 2 COMMON MERGANSERS, 8 BLACK DUCKS,
4 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 SORA, 1 SWAMP SPARROW, 1 FOX SPARROW, 1 SAVANNAH
SPARROW, 12 SONG SPARROWS, 3 EASTERN PHOEBES, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, 1
AMERICAN KESTREL, 1 BALD EAGLE adult, and 1 KILLDEER.
In Belgrade there were WOOD DUCKS, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE, and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL
on April 4.
A DICKCISSEL was at a feeder in Mount Vernon on April 2.
A GREAT BLUE HERON was seen in China on Route 3.
EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported in South Unity.
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK appeared in Wilton on March 28, along with TURKEY
VULTURES, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE, and 2 COMMON REDPOLLS.
In Clinton 1 COOPER'S HAWK was flying along I-295.
In Dixmont there were EASTERN PHOEBES and 4 NORTHERN FLICKERS on April 1.
Two TREE SWALLOWS were in Plymouth on March 30.
A GREAT BLUE HERON was in Etna on March 31.
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and BELTED KINGFISHERS arrived in Winterport on
April 5. In a yard at the end of Kaler Street in Winterport, a FIELD SPARROW
has been coming to a feeder. Also seen in the yard were 23 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS
on April 5, 9 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, and a FOX SPARROW on April 4. A COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT continues to be seen sporadically, the last time on April 3.
On April 2 there was a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the tree outside the window
here on Prentiss Street in Bangor.
At the Taylor Bait Ponds in Orono were HOODED MERGANSERS, 17 RING-NECKED
DUCKS, 1 BUFFLEHEAD, 1 COOPERS HAWK, and 2 TREE SWALLOWS.
A PALM WARBLER was seen in a yard in Pushaw Lake, Hudson.
A NORTHERN HARRIER was seen in Charleston.
Eastern Maine
A NORTHERN PINTAIL flew over Acadia National Park in Scoodic. Also present
at Scoodic was an EASTERN PHOEBE.
An EASTERN MEADOWLARK was seen in Sedgwick in Great Meadow, along with the
first OSPREY and an AMERICAN BITTERN.
At the Blue Hill Heritage Trust Land on the Kingdom Road there were 10+
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS.
An early BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER was reported at the Humboldt Field Research
Institute in Steuben on March 31.
On Johnson Cove Road in Roque Bluffs there were 1 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a
FOX SPARROW at feeders near Cow Point.
The hybrid HOODED MERGANSER X COMMON GOLDENEYE male was seen with two female
COMMON GOLDENEYES at the Factory Road section of the East Machias. At
Gardner Lake Road in East Machias there were PIED-BILLED GREBE, TREE
SWALLOW, and RING-NECKED DUCKS.
Four PALM WARBLERS were in a yard in Pembroke on April 1, along 2 GREAT BLUE
HERONS.
Northern Maine
In Houlton there were 6 FOX SPARROWS, 2 EVENING GROBBEAKS, 1 COMMON REDPOLL,
1 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, RING-NECKED DUCKS, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and COMMON and
HOODED MERGANSERS.
An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was in Wade.
A KILDEER, COMMON REDPOLLS, and 4 EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported in
Woodland.
KILDEERS were in Presque Isle.
In Caribou there were 6 WOOD DUCKS, 14 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and 2 ICELAND
GULLS.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and a MERLIN were in Madawaska.
In Monticello there were 2 EASTERN TUFTED TITMOUSE.
Birds seen in Fort Kent included 8 PINE SISKINS, 25 COMMON REDPOLLS, PURPLE
FINCH, and AMERICAN ROBINS.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen with 9 CANADA GEESE on Puddledock
Pond in Fort Fairfield. This pond is an impoundment on Pattee Brook.
(Pictures are available). A drake BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was paddling around
nearby, quite unusual in Aroostook County. Also seen on Puddledock Pond were
6 RINGNECKED DUCKS, COMMON GOLDENEYES, and COMMON and HOODED MERGANSERS.
Other finds along the river in Caribou and Fort Fairfield were 7 WOOD DUCKS
and 14 GREEN-WINGED TEAL. Fifty plus COMMON MERGANSERS, 20+ HOODED
MERGANSERS, 15+ COMMON GOLDENEYES, and 200 + MALLARDS and BLACK DUCKS were
all found in flooded backwaters along the river. In Fort Fairfield there
were newly arrived AMERICAN KESTREL and NORTHERN HARRIER.
At Collins Pond in Caribou there were two ICELAND GULLS mixed in with the
RING-BILLEDS, HERRING and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS. An arriving BELTED
KINGFISHER was also seen.
