This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for April 9, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Yellow
Grosbeak, Rusty Blackbird, Glossy Ibis, White-tailed Kite.
There have been very few reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, Clark's Nutcrackers, and Pine Grosbeaks.

In Colfax County:
At Sugarite State Park near Raton on April 1 DC found six LEWIS’S
WOODPECKERS, a DIPPER, and three BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES.
At Springer Lake on April 1 there were four FRANKLIN’S and five BONAPARTE’S
GULLS. He had three BONAPARTE’S on Stubblefield Lake on April 3.
At the Maxwell Refuge on A5 just north of the junction with A1 on March 26
DC found three LONG-EARED OWLS and a BARN OWL.

In Quay County:
DC on March 25 at Ute Lake saw 12 BOBWHITES, and at least one vocalizing
RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

In Bernalillo County:
The YELLOW GROSBEAK has been at 1412 Las Lomas NE in Albuquerque near the
UNM campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and
two stoplights north of Central. (There are two Lomas Streets). Turn west
onto Las Lomas, it is at backyard feeders. Many have viewed it through April
6 (by MB). Few reports have been received lately, by the way.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque JJ on April 1 again saw a red
FOX SPARROW and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the green feeder from the
viewing pond.
JJ also had DOWITCHERS at the ponds near Fourth and Tramway in Albuquerque
on April 2.

In Valencia county;
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen on March 28 KSo saw 17
BLACK-NECKED STILTS with the BURROWING OWL in the field across from the Taco Bell
across the highway.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio JO and MH found a GLOSSY IBIS
on the Farm Loop on April 2. It was seen by JP, LL, WW, and JO on April 8 at
the south end of the Marsh Loop. GF had the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the
visitor center on April 3, and MH reports the HARRIS’S SPARROW was still there
on April 2. MH reported a YELLOW WARBLER on April 2. On April 1 SM saw a
female-plumaged VERMILION FLYCATCHER on the Marsh Loop between Audio Stops 6
and 7.
JP, JO, LL, and WW had a calling PYGMY OWL a half mile above the campground
in Water Canyon, west of Socorro, on April 8.
In the area of A127 north of US 380 16 miles east of San Antonio on March 25
JO and JP found a SPRAGUE’S PIPIT still present near the cattle guard at the
left fork.
On the Farm-to-Market road just off 380 east of San Antonio in a flooded
field JO and JP saw twO LONG-BILLED CURLEWS. KSo found 76 curlews on March 28.
MH on March 29 found a hybrid BLUE-WINGED X CINNAMON TEAL and 30 curlews.
JO had 24 SWAINSON’S HAWKS on April 1.

In Sierra County:
JP, LL, WW, and HS had an OLIVE WARBLER in the Black Range at Emory Pass
west of Kingston on March 1.

In Grant County:
JP, LL, WW, and HS on April 1 had a single WHITE-TAILED KITE near mile
marker 33 south of Hachita where the road veers right (west) and then comes back
south (left).
The JP team on March 31 saw a BLACK HAWK at Redrock along the Gila Rio.
MF saw a ZONE-TAILED HAWK over Mangas Springs on March 18 and EW had another
on March 17 over the Gila Bird Farm. The same day RS reported the first
BLACK HAWK there and also had a red FOX SPARROW there on March 24.

In Hidalgo County:
JN on March 25 had calling POORWILLS and a PAINTED REDSTART in Clanton
Canyon. CCBr on April 2 at the canyon had the redstart, a DUSKY-CAPPED
FLYCATCHER, and heard the WHISKERED and WESTERN SCREECH-OWLS. The JP team on April 1
had a ZONE-TAILED HAWK, the flycatcher, two singing BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW west
of the summit, and several singing SCOTT’S ORIOLES.
JP, LL, WW, and HS had a BONAPARTE’S GULL at the Lordsburg Sewage Ponds on
March 31.
CCBr on April 1 had a ZONE-TAILED HAWK over Dunagan’s Crossing on county
Hwy. 1 south of Animas. They say they heard from the owner that he is selling
his 100 acres there. The JP team had a CASSIN’S KINGBIRD there on April 1.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.

In Luna County:
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to a
year for construction. Has it opened yet?

In Dona Ana County:
DG has had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE show up at odd times at his Las Cruces yard.
He also had a RUFOUS/ALLEN’S HUMMINGGIRD type with a green back on April 2
with a CARDINAL.
In Mesilla Park JN had up to ten MYRTLE WARBLERS on March 28-29. He had
BLACK-CHINNED and BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRDS in Mesilla Park on April 9.
At the Old Refuge (Mesilla Valley Bosque Park) south of Mesilla CCBr
reported a PERRGRINE FALLCON on March 28.
JZ ans MS had at their home near Radium Springs on March 25 a RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD male.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.

In Eddy County:
JN had five LONG-BILLED CURLEWS and a FERRUGINOUS HAWK south of Hope on
April 7.

Field Trips:

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. April 13 is to Bosque del Apache, April 20 to the trail at Embudito
Canyon; and on April 27 to Roger Hoppe’s home in Sandia Heights.

On Saturday, April 15 Southwest Audubon will go to Katfish Kove in Luna Co.
Trip leaders are Larry Malone and David Beatty at 534-1450.

On the weekend of April 22-23 Central will tour to Bitter Lake Refuge amd
Rattlenake Springs led by Sei Tokuda. They will spend the night in Carlsbad.

And on April 22-23 Mesilla Valley Audubon will also be at Rattlesnake
Springs and the Carlsbad area, the Salt Lakes, or Sitting Bull Falls, and the

On Sunday, April 23 Sangre de Cristo will go to the migrant trap near

The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe has nature walks on the grounds
every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. For details call them at 983-4609.

Paul Yoder advises that will nbe a MIGRATION SENSATION at Percha Dam State
Park on April 29-30. Contact him at 744-5998. A self-guided nature trail is
being built.
