HIGHLIGHTS

Cory's Shearwater, Marbled Godwit, Buff-breasted Sandpiper

The Riverhead sod farm is heating up this week. On Aug 22, 3 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS were spotted in the field northwest of the intersection of Rt 105 and
Northville Turnpike (AB). By Aug 24, there were 8 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS nearby
but south of Northville Turnpike (SA). An adult AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was found in
the dirt field west of Rt 105 near Sound Ave on Aug 25 (AB), while 3 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS were east of Doctor's Path just north of Reeves Ave (BM).

At Pike's Beach in Westhampton Dunes, there were 42 ROYAL TERNS, 1 WHIMBREL and 1
MARBLED GODWIT on Aug 24 (SA).

Four CORY'S SHEARWATERS were seen from Shinnecock Inlet on Aug 24 (SA).

At Napeague there were a few BOBOLINKS on Aug 20 (K&BRu). These birds should be
moving through our area right now, so look for them in grassy and agricultural
fields.

ADDENDA & CORRIGENDA

In the last issue of East End Birds I reported a MAGNIFICENT FRIGTAEBIRD seen by
Marguerite Wolffsohn in Lake Montauk on Aug 7. The bird was seen at 6:45 PM, not am
as I had originally reported. It turns out another birder saw the bird a few minutes
earlier. Both observers reported a uniformly dark bird, presumably a male. Although
it is possible for other frigatebird species to occur in New York, Magnificent is
overwhelmingly the most likely species to stray to our waters.

In addition to this sighting, Ireceived a second hand report from Mike Scheibel this
week. He relates that a fisherman friend of his was out on Bellport Bay on Jul 28
when they observed a FRIGATEBIRD within a few feet of their boat.

Also in the last issue I reported a WILSON'S PLOVER at Napeague on Aug 7. This
record has been retracted and should be expunged from the record. An error in
communication between the observers led to the filing of an incorrect report.

This week I received reports from Seth Ausubel, Andy Baldelli, Nick Hamblet, Bob
May, Karen & Barbara Rubinstein, Mike Scheibel and William Zitek.

Good Birding to All!
