This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday April 13, 2006 with reports of BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, LITTLE
GULL, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, LARK SPARROW, seasonal and local reports
of interest.
Five BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were noted near the intersection of West
Supawna Rd and Freas Rd in Salem County Apr 9. The birds are most
often found near the cattle pens or livestock (DeLorme P. 60, H-13).
The nearby LARK SPARROW continued through Apr 9 as well, seen in the
field near # 23 Lighthouse Rd (this is the road to Fort Mott). Also
in Salem County Apr 9 were 4 LITTLE BLUE HERONS and a CATTLE EGRET at
Mannington Marsh. A VESPER SPARROW was found along Featherbed Lane
Apr 10.
Two MARBLED GODWITs were discovered on the kayak anchorage sandbars
(A-21) at Island Beach State Park Apr 12.
Arriving migrants at Sandy Hook Apr 8 included TRICOLORED HERON,
LITTLE BLUE HERON, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
Birds noted Apr 9 included 50+ NORTHERN GANNETS, an AMERICAN BITTERN
at North Pond, 10 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, 3 YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKERS, 5 PINE WARBLERS, 10 PALM WARBLERS, and 2 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS. The vanguard WHITE-EYED VIREO was singing near Gunnison
Apr 10. Flyover PURPLE FINCH and PINE SISKIN were over North Pond Apr
11. A LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was in the locust grove Apr 12. The Sandy
Hook Migration Watch has tallied over 1400 raptors since March 15. A

A LITTLE GULL was found at Spruce Run Reservoir Apr 12, viewed from
South Point near the Wilderness Access/Boat Launch Area.
Garret Mountain had a woodpecker slam this week, with all 7 regularly
occurring species seen in one day: highlights were the continuing RED-
HEADED WOODPECKER near the horse stables on the upper roadway, and a
PILEATED WOODPECKER on the White Trail. Also noted over the weekend
were 6+ YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, 6 BROWN CREEPERS, and 6+ WINTER
WRENS. A BLUE-HEADED VIREO arrived there Apr 11.
Lincoln Park West in Jersey City Apr 10 hosted a VESPER SPARROW;
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and 2 BOAT-
TAILED GRACKLES were observed there Apr 8.
An early BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER was noted at Tenafly Nature
Center Apr 11.
A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER highlighted birds found in a spruce/pine
grove approximately 1 mile north of Walpack Center in the Delaware
Water Gap NRA Apr 9. At Kittatinny Valley State Park a VESPER SPARROW
was noted at Twin Lakes Apr 8. Other Sussex County reports Apr 8-9
included 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS at Swartswood Lake, the continuing drake
REDHEAD, BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 2 VESPER SPARROWS at the Wallkill River
NWR, and VIRGINIA RAIL and PECTORAL SANDPIPER at Hyper Humus. A map
