Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 13,
2006. This report covers the period from April 7th to April 13th and will be
updated on April 20th.

A female RUFF (Reeve) was discovered at the Great Swamp Management Area in
South Kingstown on the 12th. It was seen feeding on the small scattered
mudflats in the impoundment area. It was searched for, but not relocated the next
day. Other birds seen at the Great Swamp included: 3 WILSON'S SNIPE, 2
KILLDEER, 3 AMERICAN KESTREL several SWAMP SPARROW, 1 CHIPPING SPARROW, 3 FIELD
SPARROW, 5 EASTERN TOWHEE, 2 PALM WARBLER, 4 EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 2 RED-SHOULDERED
HAWK, 1 BARN SWALLOW and 2 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW.

A female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was found at a feeder in the Rumford section
of East Providence on the 13th. The owner is graciously inviting birders to
view his feeders from the road behind his house. He lives at 194 Hoyt Ave.
From Hoyt Ave off Route 114, take Barberry Rd, then a right onto Beech St. The
house is the 4th house on the right, a red ranch with a gray roof.

The SNOWY OWL first reported on the 5th at Third Beach Restoration area in
Middletown has been observed every day this week. It moves from Sachuest Point,
at one point it was seen sitting on the roof of a building there, to the
Restoration Area at Third Beach. Also seen here, 4 PIPING PLOVER, 6 SNOWY EGRET,
and an AMERICAN KESTREL. At Second Beach, 12 RUDDY TURNSTONE on the 10th.

A TRICOLORED HERON was found at Sheffield Cove in Jamestown on the 8th. At
Marsh Meadows in Jamestown, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON, and 70 GLOSSY IBIS were seen
on the 9th, and on the 11th, a MARSH WREN was vocalizing at Sheffield Cove.

On the 9th at Ninigret Pond, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.

At Miantonomi Park in Newport, 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER were recorded on
the 11th.

In Bristol, at ASRI’s Environmental Education Center, 3 MARSH WREN and 3
SWAMP SPARROW on the 12th.

At the East Providence Reservoir on the 11th, 1 male NORTHERN SHOVELER was
found among the more common ducks.

At Roger Williams Park in Providence on the 9th, 2 OVENBIRD, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER and 10 WOOD DUCK were reported.

On the 11th at Pulaski Park in Glocester, 1 WINTER WREN, and in the marsh
near the Ponagansett River fishing access, 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRD and 1 PURPLE FINCH.

Finally, a count done at Napatree on the 10th yielded: 240 BRANT, 70 COMMON
EIDER, 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 4 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 31
SANDERLING, 13 PURPLE SANDPIPER and 42 DUNLIN.
