Recent spring arrivals in the area include GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and
SONG SPARROW today, COMMON LOONS on the 5th, TREE SWALLOW and RUBY-
CROWNED KINGLET on the 4th, WOOD DUCK and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on
the 3rd, NORTHERN PINTAIL, CANVASBACK, GREATER SCAUP, DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANT, and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW on the 2nd, BLUE-WINGED TEAL,
NORTHERN SHOVELER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP,
PIED-BILLED GREBE, and SANDHILL CRANES on the 1st, EASTERN BLUEBIRD
on the 29th, and AMERICAN WOODCOCK on the 28th.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen at the West Skyline Hawk Count in
Duluth on the 1st, and a dark morph HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK was seen
on the 4th. TUNDRA SWANS are moving through the area in good numbers
with several days of more than 200 at the West Skyline Hawk Count,
and several hundred reported from Aitkin County over the weekend.
Two LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the 4th near the 9200 block of
Congdon Boulevard (Scenic Highway 61) east of Duluth.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on the 5th along the Homestead Road (CR
42) at the junction of the Clover Valley Road, but it could not be
relocated today.
Warren Nelson found a SHORT-EARED OWL in Aitkin County on the 5th
along CR 1, about 0.5 mile north of the diversion channel.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, April
13th.
