This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, April 14 at 12:30 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to
report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting
the transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara
is (805) 964-8240.
The FULVOUS WHISTLING-DUCK was still at the Goleta Sewage Plant on Tuesday.
Also there were two YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS. The plant is closed on
weekends. Be sure to park by the office off to your right and do not park by
the ponds or work sheds. Please walk into the office and sign in. Walk east
down to the ponds and look for the bird from the asphalt on the west side of
the ponds. Do not walk on the berms.
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen in Winchester Canyon on Saturday the 8th, near
Langlo and Wagon Wheel.
On Farren Road, also on Saturday, were three LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES,
RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROWS, and a RAVEN.
Up to 44 SURFBIRDS were on the rocks at Campus Point on the UCSB campus on
Wednesday. Last Saturday, an AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was present on the
point, but that bird was only present for one day. This is also a good spot
from which to observe the seabird migration, with loons, scoters and brant
all flying by off the coast.
The HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER was still present in Bohnett Park on Monday.
Bohnett Park is on the east side of Santa Barbara, at Victoria and San
Andreas streets. The bird was in the northwest part of the park.
A GRAY FLYCATCHER was reported from the parking lot of the Museum of Natural
History yesterday. The bird was working its way along the barbed wire fence
in the northern part of the lot.
Two ROSS'S GEESE continue at the pond at the Rancho Goleta Mobile Home Park,
off Ward Drive in Goleta.
Two BALTIMORE ORIOLES were in the cottonwoods below 6th Street on
Carpinteria Creek on Tuesday. Both birds are males.
Highlights from the Cachuma Lake boat trips last week included an EARED
GREBE and a CANADA GOOSE.
In Lompoc, several COMMON POORWILLS were on Miguelito Canyon Road on Sunday.
Miguelito Canyon Road is the southerly extension of South I Street. Look for
the birds at dusk or just after.
Two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS continue in Old La Purisima Mission Park on the
south side of Lompoc. Look in the blackberry bushes in the southeast corner
of the park. Both birds were seen yesterday.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
