This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for April 16, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Crested
Caracara, Yellow Grosbeak, Glossy Ibis, White-tailed Kite.
Migrants are beginning to arrive, some of them early.
There have been very few reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, Clark's Nutcrackers, and Pine Grosbeaks.

In Taos County:
Near the Taos Ski Vally on April 14 JP and LL on the nearby trail had two
DIPPERS, a GRAY JAY, and a PINE GROSBEAK At the Taos/Rio Arriba County line
south of Pilar on the Rio Grande there was a pair of WOOD DUCKS.
In Sandoval County:
JSt on April 14 at Cochiti Lake near the main boat ramp had a MARBLED GODWIT
and many FRANKLIN’S GULLS.
LN on April 13 saw a BROWN THRASHER in the Corrales Bosque at the Romero
Road entrance between the ditch and the river.
In Santa Fe County:
JP and LL on April 14 below the Santa Fe Ski Basin at mile marker 12 had a
BLUE GROUSE. They had a PYGMY OWL just below the ski area and another calling
at the Aspen Vista on the road.
In Colfax County:
At Sugarite State Park near Raton on April 1 DC found six LEWIS’S
WOODPECKERS and a DIPPER.
In Cibola County:
CJG on April 8-9 reported a controlled burn in the Big Tubes area of El
Malpais NM. While there he saw an ACORN WOODPECKER. The area is temporarily
closed. GRACE’S WARBLERS have returned to El Morro NM.
In Bernalillo County:
RV rported that three SAW-WHET OWLS were found above the Doc Long Picnic
Area in the eastern Sandia Mts. April 14.
JJ had a WINTER WREN on April 9 in the upper reaches of Embudito Canyon on
the west side of the Sandias. It was about a half mile below the trail that
intersects the Embudo Canyon Trail.
The YELLOW GROSBEAK has been at 1412 Las Lomas NE in Albuquerque near the
UNM campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and
two stoplights north of Central. (There are two Lomas Streets). Turn west
onto Las Lomas, it is at backyard feeders. Many have viewed it through April
9 (by JP and KR) and April 15. Few reports have been received lately, by
the way.
In Valencia county;
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen on April 14 RV reported two STILT
SANDPIPERS..
In Roosevelt County:
CR on the lek visit at Milnesand on April 8-9 found the LESSER PRAIRIE
CHICKENS in good numbers this spring. Four FIELD SPARROWS were in the area with
LARK BUNTINGS passing through in large numbers with sightings of
CHESTNUT-COLLARED LOMGSPURS and SAGE THRASHERS. He says LS had an adult HARRIS’S
SPARROW
on April 8 about 12 miles east and a mile south of Milnesand, but it was not
refound.
In Curry County:
SMc on April 9 had two LONG-BILLED CURLEWS return to her pasture a half mile
north of Clovis.
In Socorro County:
JP found a CARACARA on April 15 in an alfalfa field just north of San Acacia
at mile marker 164 on I-25, best seen from the east frontage road. It was
later seen by JO and JS. It was seen on April 16 by several.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio a GLOSSY IBIS was seen by MH on
April 14, RV and CR on April 15, and PS on April 16 at the south end of the
Marsh Loop. CL had the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the visitor center on April
15 with a WILLET and a VERMILION FLYCATCHER. CR and RV found the HARRIS’S
SPARROW still present on April 15, and JP reported the willet, two
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 40 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and 250 WESTERN SANDPIPERS. On April 9
SM
heard a BELL’E VIREO on the Rio Viejo Trail near guidepost 10 with WHITE
PELICANS in good numbers.
On the NMTU campus in Socorro on April 9 KR photographed a hybrid MYRTLE X
AUDUBON’S WARBLER. On April 14 MH had six warbler species present.
JP, JO, LL, and WW had a calling PYGMY OWL a half mile above the campground
in Water Canyon, west of Socorro, on April 8. RC had a ZONE-TAILED HAWK in
the canyon on April 2. SM reports that the campground is closed and will be
moved to a new site. A trail is to be built for birding.
In Catron County:
JH had a COMMON GRACKLE at her ranch east of Datil on April 13.
In Chaves County:
BW and JNM on April 12 saw three AMERICAN BITTERNS from the blind at Bitter
Lake Refuge.
In Sierra County:
On April 15 on Las Animas Canyon near Caballo Lake CL had a BROAD-WINGED
HAWK and found the BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS are still present.
At Percha Dam State Park on April 15 CL found a CASSIN’S VIREO and seven
warbler species, while JP saw none warbler species, including a singing male
NORTHERN PARULA.
JP found a male HOODED ORIOLE at Hillsboro on April 15.
JP, LL, WW, and HS had an OLIVE WARBLER in the Black Range at Emory Pass
west of Kingston on March 1.
In Grant County:
JP had a PAINTED REDSTART and GRACE’S WARBLER at the Iron Creek Picnic
Ground in the Black Range on April 15.
JDM had a pair of MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS at her feeders at Roberts Lake on
April 15 with a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD on April 14. PT had a pair of RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRDS in Silver City on April 12.
RS saw 17 AVOCETS on Bill Evans Lake on 15 with a GREAT EGRET.
PT had a CATBIRD at Mangas Springs on April 11.
MCF at the Gila River Farm on April 13 had a late SANDHILL CRANE and 38
WHITE PELICANS. On Spril 14 there was a CATTLE EGRET and a LESSER YELLOWLEGS.
CF had a PEREGRINE FALCON at the Cherry Creek Campground near Pinos Altos on
April 14.
JP, LL, WW, and HS on April 1 had a single WHITE-TAILED KITE near mile
marker 33 south of Hachita where the road veers right (west) and then comes back
south (left).
In Hidalgo County:
CCBr on April 2 at Clanton Canyon had a DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER, and heard
the WHISKERED-SCREECH-OWLS. The JP team on April 1 had a ZONE-TAILED HAWK,
the flycatcher, two singing BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW west of the summit, and
several singing SCOTT’S ORIOLES.
SK on April 15 was surprised by a SNOWY EGRET sitting on a fence post on NM
9 west of Animas.
CCBr on April 1 at Dunagan’s Crossing on county Hwy. 1 south of Animas say
they heard from the owner that he is selling his 100 acres there.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.
In Luna County:
At Katfish Kove near the Grant Co. line on April 15 the bird trip found
several PAINTED REDSTARTS, a female HOODED ORIOLE, and a male YELLOW-THORATED
WARBLER.
LM had a MERLIN in Deming on April 5.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to a
year for construction. Has it opened yet?
In Dona Ana County:
DG has had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE show up at odd times at his Las Cruces yard.
He saw it again on April 11.
In Mesilla Park JN still had several MYRTLE’S WARBLERS on April 10. CL and
CCBr had a CASSIN’S VIREO on April 14.
CBr at the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park south of Mesilla on April 11 had a
SWAMP SPARROW and a CARDINAL.
On the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs on the east sidr of the Organ Mts.
DG on April 9 found many BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS, an ACORN WOODPECKER, AND
two HUTTON’S VIREOS. JN on April saw the woodpecker, a PAINTED REDSTART, three
male SCOTT’S ORIOLES, and five of the vireos.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.
In Eddy County:
JN had five LONG-BILLED CURLEWS south of Hope on April 7.
BW and JNM on April 12 had a SPRAGUE’S PIPIT north of co. 95 about ten miles
north of Hope. They had a BAIRD’S SPARROW in Bullis Canyon ten miles
southwest of Hope with CASSIN’S SPARROWS.
KH had BURROWING OWLS in the Super ( parking lot in Carlsbad on April 9.
In Lea County:
RC on Apirl 8 had a MYRTLE WARBLER at the Tatum Sewage Ponds.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. April 20 is to the trail at Embudito Canyon; and on April 27 to Roger
Hoppe’s home in Sandia Heights. On May 4 they go to the pond in Manzano and
the Quarai Ruins
On the weekend of April 22-23 Central will tour to Bitter Lake Refuge amd
Rattlenake Springs led by Sei Tokuda. They will spend the night in Carlsbad.

Springs and the Carlsbad area, the Salt Lakes, or Sitting Bull Falls, and the

On Sunday, April 23 Sangre de Cristo will go to the migrant trap near

On May 6, the Colfax County group will explore the Cimarron area and several
of the private ranches in the area meeting at the historic St. James Hotel
at 7:30 (6:30 for breakfast). Leader is Dave Cleary at 375-2971.
On Saturday, May 6, Central Audubon will go to the Tucumcari area. Leader
is Chris Rustay at 255-7786.
Paul Yoder advises that will nbe a MIGRATION SENSATION at Percha Dam State
Park on April 29-30. Contact him at 744-5998. A self-guided nature trail is
being built.
The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe has nature walks on the grounds
every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. For details call them at 983-4609.
