Highlights
At Biddeford Pool the REDHEAD continues to be seen at the pond between
the retreat center and the public beach.
A SEASIDE SPARROW was seen several times over the weekend at Bayview
Preserve in Yarmouth.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was reported over the Fields Pond Audubon Sanctuary in
Holden on April 9.
A HOARY REDPOLL was seen at a feeder in Woodland along with COMMON
REDPOLLS.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen near Messalonskee Lake in Belgrade and another
one was seen in West Leeds.
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were seen in Arundel and Cape Elizabeth.
RAPTOR reports have increased throughout most of the state.
York County
In York a HERMIT THRUSH was seen on April 9.
Five HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen at Cape Neddick Light on April 9. Two
MUTE SWANS were in the Cape Neddick River on April 11.
A dozen or more HARLEQUIN DUCKS are still in Perkins Cove and off the
Marginal Way in Ogunquit. A PIPING PLOVER was on Ogunquit Beach.
On the Harbor Road in Wells were 11 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 4 SNOWY EGRETS, 1
NORTHERN SHOVELER, and 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS on April 8. A PINE WARBLER
and 2 OSPREY were seen in Wells. At Wells Beach there were 2 PIPING
PLOVERS.
At Gooserocks Beach in Kennebunk there were 3 PIPING PLOVERS and 1
GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS,
and PALM WARBLERS were in a yard on River Road in Arundel on April 9.
At Biddeford Pool the REDHEAD continues to be seen at the pond between
the retreat center and the public beach along with a pair of BLUE-WINGED
TEAL and a SWAMP SPARROW.
On the marsh below Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco on April 9 there were at
least 34 WILSON'S SNIPE.
Scarborough Marsh Area
Twelve GREAT EGRETS, 30 GLOSSY IBIS, 3 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, SNOWY EGRETS,
2 GADWALL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and 1 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were behind Pelreco
this week.
A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON flew over Pine Point on April 11.
At Higgins Beach there was a PIPING PLOVER.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was soaring over Fuller Farm on April 11. Also seen
in the area were BROAD-WINGED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTRELS, SHARP-SHINNED
HAWKS, RUFFED GROUSE, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, and a NORTHERN RAVEN.
At Dunstan Landing were 2 pair of AMERICAN WIGEONS and a PIED-BILL
GREBE.
There were 4 WILSON'S SNIPE at Scarborough Marsh feeding in the mud with
several LESSER YELLOWLEGS just after the Pine Point Nursing Home on
April 8.
On Eastern Road there were 2 VIRGINIA RAILS, SAVANNAH and SONG SPARROWS,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, TREE SWALLOWS, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
and PIED-BILLED GREBE.
Greater Portland and Western Maine
A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen on High Bluff Road in Cape Elizabeth on
April 13.
A MERLIN, 1 VEERY, 2 PINE WARBLERS, 1 YELLOW WARBLER, 1 BLACK and WHITE
WARBLER, and 1 FOX SPARROW were seen at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland
this week.
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was singing in Westbrook.
The SEASIDE SPARROW was seen several times over the weekend at Bayview
Preserve in Yarmouth. (Bayview Preserve is located off of Bayview Road
in Yarmouth, Delorme Map 6: D-1). When you enter the preserve, take the
trail to the right of the kiosk. Enter the woods, and follow the trail
as it borders the marsh from above a steep hillside. Near where the
trail turns left to parallel the river, head down the hill into the
marsh. The sparrow was in an island of cattails within the sporting
patens marsh. It usually stayed within this cattail patch but
occasionally flew into the marsh.
CHIPPING SPARROWS were seen in Falmouth and Freeport.
An AMERICAN KESTREL, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, and TREE SWALLOWS were seen in
Pownal. Hawks over Bradbury Mountain in Pownal this week included a good
flight of 55 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 35 OSPREY, 6 NORTHERN
HARRIERS, 18 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 8 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 5 RED-TAILED
HAWKS, and 1 MERLIN.
A NORTHERN FLICKER and 3 CHIPPING SPARROWS were in Windham on April 12.
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen in Gray on Route 115.
A PINE WARBLER was seen in Bridgton on April 8. Also seen in this area
were 2 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 2 BARRED OWLS, 1 COMMON LOON, and 1 SPOTTED
SANDPIPER.
Midcoast
An OSPREY was seen in Phippsburg on April 9, and a RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER was seen on April 6. Also seen in there area were BALD EAGLE,
PURPLE FINCH, FOX SPARROW, and CEDAR WAXWINGS.
In Georgetown 2 GREAT HORNED OWLS were heard on April 6.
On Monhegan Island there were GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, BROWN CREEPER,
FOX, SONG, CHIPPING and FIELD SPARROWS, HERMIT THRUSH, 1 BROWN THRASHER,
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and an AMERICAN WOODCOCK.
Central Maine
At the Vaughn Woods in Hallowell there were 10 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 1
WINTER WREN, and 1 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET.
A BALTIMORE ORIOLE, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMP WARBLERS,
and a PALM WARBLER were seen in a yard in Augusta on April 11.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen in West Leeds on April 10.
Another SANDHILL CRANE was seen near the Messalonskee Lake boat launch
in Belgrade. Other birds in the area included NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1 SWAMP
SPARROW, 2 FOX SPARROWS, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and 30 RING-NECKED DUCKS.
In Wilton there were 4 FOX SPARROWS, 6 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, GREAT
BLUE HERON, MERLIN, COOPER'S HAWK, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, and NORTHERN
GOSHAWK.
Ten EVENING GROSBEAKS were at a feeder in Plymouth.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in Troy on April 8.
An OSPREY was seen in Detroit.
On April 7, a GREAT HORNED OWL flew over the fields on the Green Point
Road in Brewer.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was reported over the Fields Pond Audubon Sanctuary in
Holden on April 9.
Five NORTHERN SHOVELERS swam up the Stillwater River in Orono on April
8.
A TURKEY VULTURE was in Dexter.
Eastern Maine
In Dedham there were 5 TURKEY VULTURES, AMERICAN KESTREL, 2 OSPREY, 2
RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 60+ DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 2
TREE SWALLOWS, PALM WARBLER 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS, EASTERN PHOEBE, and 2
SONG SPARROWS.
A WINTER WREN was at Sieur de Monts on Mount Desert Island.
At Roque Bluffs State Park there were 5 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS.
At the Stimpson Landing in East Machias there were 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL,
24 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and 2 GADWALL.
In Whiting, near Looks' Cannery there were 2 pair of GADWALL.
In East Machias on Gardner Lake Road there were 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS.
On April 10 at the Lubec Flats there were 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS and 1
GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
A SNOWY OWL was reported on the Timbercove Road in Trescott.
Northern Maine
In Houlton there were 5 COMMON REDPOLLS, 30 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 2 WILD
TURKEYS, and FOX and AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS.
A HOARY REDPOLL was seen at a feeder in Woodland along with COMMON
REDPOLLS.
A PILEATED WOODPECKER, 6 BOREAL CHICKADEES, and 1 SONG SPARROW were seen
in Fort Kent on April 10. On April 11 there were AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, 1
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and CANADA GEESE.
