Thursday April 20, 2006 with reports of WHITE-FACED IBIS, WILSON’S
PLOVER, LITTLE GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, GAMBEL’S WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW,
seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.
A WHITE-FACED IBIS was found at the Tuckahoe portion of McNamara WMA
Apr 17-18; it was described as a dull adult with red eyes and bare
parts. The bird was part of a large GLOSSY IBIS flock at the small
impoundment on the right along the loop road: call the CMBO Hotline
for more details.
A WILSON’S PLOVER was discovered on the beach off Norbury Landing Rd
in the Villas, Cape May County Apr 19: call the CMBO Hotline for
details.
An adult LITTLE GULL was among 300 BONAPARTE’S GULLS at South Amboy
Apr 16, viewed from the Morgan side of the creek mouth. On Apr 17 an
immature LITTLE GULL was noted there. A first-year GLAUCOUS GULL was
discovered there Apr 17 and 2 first-year GLAUCOUS GULLS and an adult
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were there Apr 18. For more information

Sightings at Sandy Hook this week included 200+ NORTHERN GANNETS, 30
MERLINS, CASPIAN TERN, CHIMNEY SWIFT, CLIFF SWALLOW, BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, PRAIRIE WARBLER, “GAMBEL’S” WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW (all at the
hawkwatch platform) and INDIGO BUNTING; all Apr 15. Another CASPIAN
TERN was a fly-by over the hawkwatch Apr 19. A free, detailed
birding map is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for
daily reports.
An AMERICAN BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, and a SORA were all vocal at the
Heronry Overlook at the end of Pleasant Plains Rd in the Great Swamp
NWR Apr 15. Also noted this week in the swamp were 2 BLUE-WINGED
TEAL and large numbers of displaying WILD TURKEYS.
An excellent total of 36 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was tallied in Troy Meadows
Apr 15.
Two singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS were back on territory at Bull’s
Island State Park Apr 18.
A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER has been viewed for a second year in a row
in the Delaware Water Gap NRA: it sings a non-typical song and is
present in the spruces approximately one half mile south of Peter’s
Valley along the fishing access trail below the “Mile 9” marker on
Rte 615. At Tillman’s Ravine in Stokes State Forest 9 BLUE-HEADED
VIREOS and 3 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES were back on territory Apr 14.
Birds found at the Allendale Celery Farm this week included an
AMERICAN BITTERN and a late FOX SPARROW Apr 17. Another AMERICAN
BITTERN was noted at Tenafly Nature Center Apr 19.
