This is the Michigan Statewide Bird Report for Thursday, April 20th, 2006.
This month is sponsored by Sarett Nature Center.
***MESSAGE FROM EDITORS: “MICHIGAN BIRDS AND NATURAL HISTORY”***
The co-managing editors, Raymond Adams & Allen Chartier, of our state
ornithological journal: “Michigan Birds and Natural History” are actively
seeking a new Editor to take the place of the late Jim Granlund, starting
this fall, with the production of the first 2007 issue. If anyone (or a
team) is interested in taking on the MBNH editorship, or if you know someone
who may be a good candidate, we want to hear from you soon! Please contact
Ray Adams, Adamsknc@aol.com
[NOTE—Due to increase in reported birds this week, combined with the
compilers limited time, resulted in posting only the “rarest of rare”
(species of casual-accidental occurrence) this week.]
In ONTONOGAN COUNTY as of April 19th (1st obs April 18th) a EURASIAN TREE
SPARROW* has been attending the feeders of Kitt Wulf in Topaz. If accepted
by the Michigan Bird Records Committee, it would represent the second record
in Michigan of this species! Birders are welcome, but call first before
coming over, they would like to know you are on your way. The phone number
is 906-575-3367.
In HURON COUNTY on April 15th, members of Genesee Audubon found a male
TUFTED DUCK* at the the Sebewaing Sewage Ponds. The duck was seen among
hundred-plus ducks, mostly SCAUP SPECIES, from 11:35 - 12:03 pm. It then
flew off with all the scaup in the direction of Saginaw Bay, unfortunately,
and did not return. It has been searched for since, but not relocated. On
April 14th, a drake EURASIAN WIGEON* was seen among a small flock of
AMERICAN WIGEONS south of Caseville. The birds were in the gravel pit on the
east side of Bayport Road south of Caseville, off M-25.
In MARQUETTE COUNTY, from April 13th through at least April 18th, a
TRICOLORED HERON* has been seen along the Chocolay River Bayou near Harvey.
The bird has been seen frequently from a bridge crossing the river. To get
to this bridge park at the Welcome Center on US-41/M-28 and behind the
center is a snowmobile/bike trail. Walk east on the trail to the first
bridge, the heron has been seen here.
IN SANILAC COUNTY April 16th, a EURASIAN WIGEON* (sex?) was seen at the
sewage ponds (in 2 of 3 ponds) at Port Sanilac. It too was seen among
AMERICAN WIGEONS as well as other duck species.
In WASHTENAW COUNTY* April 17th, a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON* was seen from
a kayak up stream from Barton Pond, about 150 yards downstream (east) of
Foster on the Huron River Drive bank. To the best of my knowledge, it has
not been relocated.
In BERRIEN COUNTY, 2 EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES* continued to be seen, through
April 17th in the Three Oaks village park, located at the corner of US-12
and Three Oaks Road. Look for them in the Colorado Blue Spruce near the
southwest corner of the park.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, April 27th,
2006. To report your sightings, please leave a message at the sound of the
tone, or call Jon Wuepper at 269-556-9510. Thank you for calling and good
birding.
