Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
A Male LAZULI BUNTING, 4 male and 1 female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS
continued in the Del Rosa foothill area of San Bernardino.
Sandy Remley reported an ALLEN’S HUMMINGBIRD from her backyard feeder in
the Big Bear Lake area. From Erwin Lake she reported GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
COMMON GOLDENEYE, NORTHERN SHOVELER, and many WESTERN BLUEBIRDS. At Grout
Bay she saw AMERICAN WIGEON, PIED-BILLED GREBE and numerous AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN.
Tom Wurster and Liga Auzins reported from the Mohave National Preserve
April 8 and 9. They commented about the large scale of destruction from
the June fire. Only a small patch of mature pinions and junipers remain at
the Mid Hills Campground where they reported two pair of JUNIPER TITMOUSE.
The rest of the burned area was birdless. They reported more CRISSAL
THRASHERS than in past years along Wild Horse Canyon Rd. concentrated by
the fire into the small unburned patches. PINYON JAYS (30+) and migrant
HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHERS (15+) were present in the pinions adjacent to the
burned areas. Other migrants were scarce consisting of 1 GRAY FLYCATCHER,
CASSIN’S (1) AND WESTERN KINGBIRD (2), several flocks of VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOWS, a scattering of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 2 SAGE THRASHERS, 1 BLACK-
THROATED GRAY WARBLER and 1 GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE. Additional specialty
breeding birds for the area included 3 GILDED FLICKERS (Powerline road on
south slope of Cima Dome), and 8 BENDIRE’S THRASHERS.
George Nash reported the following birds from the Redlands area:
LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCH, 1 female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, BULLOCK’S ORIOLE,
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS, and a WHITE-TAILED KITE hovering over the Santa Ana
River.
Cathy McFadden and Paul Clarke birded Glen Helen Regional Park on Saturday
April 15. They reported empid migrant activity including HAMMOND’S, DUSKY
and PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS. They saw YELLOW, WILSON’S, NASHVILLE and
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS as well as BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, CASSIN’S
VIREOS, VAUX’S SWIFTS, 5 species of swallows including a single BANK
SWALLOW.
On Sunday April 16, David Chadsey reported a male LAZULI BUNTING, and
BLACK-THROATED WARBLER the Etiwanda area.
Larry LaPre reported from Big Morongo on Sunday April 16. He saw
WILSON’S, ORANGE-CROWNED and NASHVILLE WARBLERS, HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER,
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK, and a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD plus the usual residents
including WESTERN BLUEBIRD.
On Sunday April 16, Steve Druce reported his first WESTERN TANAGER of the
season in Crestline. He also reported a possible PINE SISKIN.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
On Tuesday April 11, Chet McGaugh reported the following birds from Desert
Center: CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD (the first he has seen there), BLACK-CHINNED
HUMMINGBIRD, CASSIN’S VIREO, PRAIRIE FALCON, HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER, GRAY
FLYCATCHER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, WILSON’S WARBLER, LAZULI BUNTING, and
YELLOW-RUMPED and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS.
On Wednesday April 12, Crispen Rendon birded the Box Springs area and
reported an extensive list of birds. Birds of note included GREEN-TAILED
TOWHEE, HERMIT WARBLER, and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER.
On April 14 John Green reported 2 GRAY FLYCATCHERS, one in his yard in the
Box Springs area and another in the Prado Basin Park. He also reported
BLACK-CHINNED HB, VAUX’S SWIFT, EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES, SPOTTED DOVE and
WOOD DUCK from the park.
On April 15, Roger Higson reported LUCY’S (30+), NASHVILLE(20+), YELLOW
(12+) and a singing MYRTLE WARBLER plus ASH-THROATED, HAMMOND’S
and “WESTERN” FLYCATCHERS, BENDIRE THRASHER, and a flock of WHITE-FACED
IBIS. He also reported two singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS (a Blythe
lifer.) April 16, Roger Higson reported on a short drive along 6th in
Blythe. Birds spotted included: ZONE-TAILED HAWK flying over, 37 WHIMBREL
and 22 LONG-BILLED CURLEW in a flooded field along with 2 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, and a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, a BONAPARTE’S GULL making passes
over the field, 3 SWAINSON’S HAWKS, a PRAIRIE FALCON, VAUX’S SWIFT, and a
PEREGRINE FALCON. He also noted there were seven BRONZED COWBIRDS at his
feeder.
April 17, David Peel reported several WILSON’S WARBLERS, one BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAK, and an OSPREY at San Jacinto Wildlife area. The OSPREY was on an
island in one of the ponds by the viewing platform.
Dave Chadsey reported a GREEN HERON at Rubidoux Park on April 16. The bird
was seen moving down the creek channel to the marshy area at dusk.
Lidia Seebeck reported seeing a flock of at least eight, possibly more,
RED-CROWNED PARROTS in the Parkview area of Riverside. The birds roost in
the palms and eucs near the Parkview Nursery parking lot. She also spotted
a PIED-BILLED GREBE at Fairmount Park, and a continuing RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD
in the Pachappa Drive area.
Madeline Bauer reported a BULLOCK’S ORIOLE and one light MERLIN at the
Goose Creek Golf Course in Mira Loma. She also saw a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
near the creek trail in Rubidoux on April 15.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
April 14, Don Roberson reported from a windy Salton Sea area. He spotted a
RUFF in the pond on the east side of the causeway leading out to Red Hill.
He also had an alternate RUDDY TURNSTONE on the north side of Red Hill, a
SWAINSON’S HAWK over Forrester Road, a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL at
Lindseye and Lack, several VAUX’S SWIFT scattered about, and a GILA
WOODPECKER working on a nest hole at the entrance to Brawley Cemetery.
Bob Miller and Henry Detwiler reported on April 17 from the southern
Salton Sea area. Birds seen included: 5 RUDDY TURNSTONE and 1 BLACK
TURNSTONE, DUNLIN, 2 MERLIN, 2 BLACK SKIMMERS, 2 GREATER SCAUP, 4
REDHEADS, and 2 AMERICAN WIGEON at Red Hill Marina. At Obsidian Butte,
they spotted BLACK TERN and WILSON’S PHALAROPE, both first of the season,
and a PEREGRINE FALCON at Obsidian Butte. They also saw GULL-BILLED TERN
at several locations, and heard BLACK RAILS calling from West Pond.
