Weather Summary: A deep low pressure system parked
itself offshore to our East, producing clouds,
scattered showers, and cooler temperatures that were
at, or slightly below, normal Sat. through Mon. Temps
returned to the low 60's on Tuesday (and around 70 on
Wed.), despite continuing northerly winds. The
persistent northerly flow this week produced little in
the way of new migrants.
A single male AMERICAN WIGEON was at South Portland's
Hinckley Park on the 19th, while good numbers of
RING-NECKED DUCKS were reported from multiple
locations this week.
One adult NORTHERN GANNET was off of East Point at
Biddeford Pool on 4/14.
An AMERICAN BITTERN was at the Gray Meadows (Delorme
Map 5: C-4) on 4/15. Good counts of GLOSSY IBIS were
made on the 16th, with 41 behind the Scarborough Marsh
Nature Center and 76 in the salt pannes along Rte 1/9.
Single NORTHERN GOSHAWKS were seen around Hurricane
Road in Falmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-4) on a couple of
occasions this week, while one was spotted at Fuller
Farm (off of Broadturn Rd; Delorme Map 3: A-3) on the
17th. An immature PEREGRINE FALCON hunted Portland's
Back Cove on 4/19.
A lingering 1st Cycle GLAUCOUS GULL was spotted at
Biddeford Pool on 4/14.
Twelve FISH CROWS in the Burger King parking lot on
Route 302 in Windham (Delorme Map 5: D-3) on the 15th
may be evidence of a colony nearby.
A male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was in Robinson Woods in
Cape Elizabeth (off of Shore Rd; Delorme Map 3: A-5)
on 4/14, one was in Saco's Laurel Hill Cemetery on
4/17, while a female returned to a Windham yard this
week.
The CAROLINA WREN continues here at the Wild Bird
Center of Yarmouth.
A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER arrived, and was at the edge
of the Biddeford Pool Beach parking lot on the 16th.
The GRAY CATBIRD that overwintered at Portland's
Dragon Field was singing on 4/19.
A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was reported from a Wells feeder
on 4/16, while the first COMMON YELLOWTHROAT of spring
was singing at Cape Neddick Beach (near the
campground; Delorme Map 1: A-5) on the 20th.
1-2 "IPSWICH" SAVANNAH SPARROWS were seen in the
Biddeford Pool area this week.
Returning PURPLE FINCHES were widely reported this
week, while two EVENING GROSBEAKS visited a New
Gloucester feeder on 4/16.
Observations and reports of LITTLE BLUE HERON,
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET,
CHIPPING SPARROW, and SWAMP SPARROW increased this
week.
