Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 20,
2006. This report covers the period from April 14th to April 20th and will be
updated on April 27th.
The female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL that was found at a feeder in the Rumford
section of East Providence on the 13th, was seen again on the 14th.
The SNOWY OWL first reported on the 5th at Third Beach Restoration area in
Middletown was last reported on the 18th. It has been seen at the Restoration
Area and around Sachuest Point. On the 17th at Sachuest: 1 AMERICAN KESTREL, 3
RED-THROATED LOON, 1 NORTHERN GANNET, 4 HARLEQUIN DUCK and 5 BLACK SCOTER.
In Portsmouth, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen on Jepson Lane that day.
On the 15, two COMMON RAVEN were observed as they flew over Greenville.
At the Hazard Road salt marsh in Newport on the 17th, 1 TRICOLORED HERON and
2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL. On the 19th, a 1st year BALD EAGLE was seen there.
At Marsh Meadows in Jamestown on the 15th, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON and 40 GLOSSY
IBIS.
At Succotash Marsh, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported on the 20th.
A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was observed calling and flying north over upper
Narragansett Bay on the 19th.
On the 18th, at ASRI’s EEC in Bristol, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and 2 MARSH WREN
along the boardwalk. Just to the North, at Jacob’s Point, 1 WILSON'S SNIPE
was seen in the marsh.
At Lonsdale Marsh in Lincoln on the 18th, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, 3 VIRGINIA
RAIL, 4 SWAMP SPARROW and 8 WOOD DUCK.
Also on the 18th, at Long Pond in Hopkinton, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPER.
>From northern Rhode Island on the 16th: at Durfee Hill, 1 BROAD-WINGED HAWK,
2 EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 1 KILLDEER, 2 OSPREY, 1 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and 1
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. On Ponagansett Road in Foster, 2 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, and
at Barden Reservoir, 1 BALD EAGLE.
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen at the corner of Durfee Hill Road and Chestnut
Hill Road in Glocester. This is a late report, the bird was seen on the
12th.
CHIPPING SPARROW reports were widespread this week, and the 1st report of a
BLUE-HEADED VIREO came from East Providence on the 17th.
A report from Napatree Point in Westerly on the 19th included: 50 BRANT, 2
COMMON EIDER, 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 2 PIPING PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER
and 2 DUNLIN. On the 20th, 2 CASPIAN TERN and 1 SEASIDE SPARROW were
reported. At Avondale Farm Preserve, 1 WILSON'S SNIPE, seen on the 20th.
Finally, a WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard calling in Perryville on the 20th.
