This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for April 23, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given
for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Yellow
Grosbeak, Glossy Ibis, eastern migrants.
There have been very few reports of Cassin's Finches, Red Crossbills,
Evening Grosbeaks, Clark's Nutcrackers, and Pine Grosbeaks.
The Cibola Natl. Forest, nainly mt. Ranges in central N.M. has increased
fire restrictions.

In Taos County:
Near the Taos Ski Village on April 14 JP and WW on Twining Road above the
village had two DIPPERS, a GRAY JAY, and a PINE GROSBEAK. Just north of the
Taos/Rio Arriba County line south of Pilar on the Rio Grande there was a pair
of WOOD DUCKS.

In Sandoval County:
LLa on April 16 saw eight EVENING GROSBEAKS in Jemez Springs.
LN on April 13 saw a BROWN THRASHER in the Corrales Bosque at the Romero
Road entrance between the ditch and the river.

In Santa Fe County:
JSt on April 19 on the pond at Caja del Rio and Wildlife Way in Santa Fe
just north of the new Animal Shelter saw a possible male MALLARD hybrid with
either a MEXICAN or BLACK DUCK.
JP and WW on April 14 below the Santa Fe Ski Basin near mile marker 12 had a
BLUE GROUSE. They had a PYGMY OWL just below the ski area and another
calling at the Aspen Vista on the road.

In Cibola County:
CJG on April 8-9 reported a controlled burn in the Big Tubes area of El
Malpais NM. While there he saw an ACORN WOODPECKER.
The first WHITE-WINGED DOVE appeared at El Morro NM on April 16. On April
22 he reported a GRAY FLYCATCHER with four SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS at the sewage
ponds. SB had a BLACK-THORATED SPARROW on April 21.
At Ramah Lake there were 15 WHITE-FACED IBIS and two BLACK PHOEBES.

In Bernalillo County:
RV reported three SAW-WHET OWLS were found above the Doc Long Picnic Area in
the eastern Sandia Mts. April 14.
The YELLOW GROSBEAK has been at 1412 Las Lomas NE in Albuquerque near the
UNM campus. The street is off of University, one stoplight south of Lomas, and
two stoplights north of Central. (There are two Lomas Streets). Turn west
onto Las Lomas, it is at backyard feeders. Many have viewed it.
nw reported it still present on April 20.
PS had a singing WHITE-THROATED SPARROW still at the front feeder of the Rio
Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque April 19.

In Valencia county:
WW had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and a MYRTLE WARBLER at the Madrone Ponds
south of Belen on April 17.
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen MB saw one STILT SANDPIPER April
18. JP on April 22 reported the sandpiper and two GLOSSY IBIS with 75
WHITE-FACED.

In Roosevelt County:
CR on the lek visit at Milnesand on April 8-9 found the LESSER PRAIRIE
CHICKENS in good numbers this spring. CW reported 27 prairie chickens there on
April 18 with a male NORTHERN PARULA on private land 15 miles northeast of
Milnesand.
At the migrant trap west of Melrose BH and JBl on april 20 had several
MYRTLE WARBLERS, a nale BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, and a female NORTHERN PARULA.
JBl also had two NASHVILLE WARBLERS.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio a GLOSSY IBIS was seen by MB on
April 18 at the south end of the Marsh Loop. JP did not see it April 22.
At the refuge CR and RV found the HARRIS’S SPARROW still present on April
15. BMH on April 16 saw a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and a ZONE-TAILED HAWK near the
Chupadera Deck. CL on April 16 saw 2 MOORHENS, a VERMILION FLYCATCHER, two
BELL’S VIREOS, and the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the visitor center. RV, CR,
and SM on April 15 found a CASSIN’S VIREO. JP on April 22 reported a MARBLED
GODWIT.
CL at Turtle Bay Park on the nmtu campus in Socorro on April 16 found a
TOWNSEND’S WARBLER.
JBu had a male SCOTT’S ORIOLE at her Socorro feeder on April 20.
JP, JO, LL, and WW had a calling PYGMY OWL a half mile above the campground
in Water Canyon, west of Socorro, on April 8. SM reports that the campground
is closed and will be moved to a new site. A trail is to be built for
birding.

In Catron County:
JH had a COMMON GRACKLE at her ranch east of Datil on April 13.

In Chaves County:
BW and JNM on April 12 saw three AMERICAN BITTERNS from the blind at Bitter
Lake Refuge.

In Sierra County:
CL saw 12 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS at the Caballo Dairy in Arrey on April 16. He
had one near Garfield on April 22.
On April 15 on Las Animas Canyon near Caballo Lake CL had a BROAD-WINGED
HAWK and found the BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS are still present.
At Percha Dam State Park on April 22 JP reported a female NOWTHERN PARULA, a
BELL’S VIREO, and two CASSIN’S VIREOS. In addition CL had four
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, an OSPREY, and 12 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS flying over. He had a
male HERMIT WARBLER a half mile south of the park on the river.
JP on April 22 had two FORSTER’S TERN at North Monticello Point of Elephant
Butte Lake on April 22.
JP found a male HOODED ORIOLE at Hillsboro on April 15.

In Grant County:
JDM had a pair of MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS at her feeders at Roberts Lake on
April 15 with a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD on April 14. PT had a pair of RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRDS in Silver City on April 12.
PT had a CATBIRD at Mangas Springs on April 11. JD saw it there on April 16.
CF had a PEREGRINE FALCON at the Cherry Creek Campground near Pinos Altos on
April 14.

In Hidalgo County:
CCB on April 2 at Clanton Canyon had a DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER, and heard
the WHISKERED-SCREECH-OWLS.
CCBr at Dunagan’s Crossing on county Hwy. 1 south of Animas say they heard
from the owner that he is selling his 100 acres there.
NMC reminds that County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the
road.

In Luna County:
At Katfish Kove near the Grant Co. line on April 15 the bird trip led by LM
and DB
found several PAINTED REDSTARTS, a female HOODED ORIOLE, and a male
YELLOW-THORATED WARBLER.
LM advises that the waste treatment ponds there will be closed for up to a
year for construction. He says they may be finished by the end of May.

In Dona Ana County:
MP reported a possible WHITE-EYED VIREO on the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre
Springs Park on the east side of the Organ Mts. on April 21. On the trail DG
on April 9 found many BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS JN on April 15 saw the ACORN
WOODPECKERr, a PAINTED REDSTART, and five HUTTON’S VIREOS.
JN on April 19 nrsr the Mesilla Dam had 15 WHITE PELICANS.
DG has had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE show up at odd times at his Las Cruces yard,
seen again on April 11. On April 13 there was a GRAY FLYCATCHER.
In Mesilla Park CL and CCB had a CASSIN’S VIREO on April 14. JN saw a adult
BROAD-WINGED HAWK flying over on April 18.
CBr at the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park south of Mesilla on April 11 had a
SWAMP SPARROW and a CARDINAL.

In Otero County:
DG on Otero Mesa on April 21-22 at a well with open water and a few Siberian
elms found several migrants including an OSPREY.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the "no access" signs
are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.

In Eddy County:
SRW had a BLACKPOLL WARBLER female at Rattlesnake Springs on April 14.
BW and JNM on April 12 had a SPRAGUE’S PIPIT north of co. 95 about ten miles
north of Hope. They had a BAIRD’S SPARROW in Bullis Canyon ten miles
southwest of Hope.
KH had BURROWING OWLS in the Super 8 parking lot in Carlsbad on April 9.

In Lea County:
RC on Apirl 8 had a MYRTLE WARBLER at the Tatum Sewage Ponds.

Field Trips:

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On April 27 they go to Roger Hoppe’s home in Sandia Heights. On May 4
the trip is to the pond in Manzano and the Quarai Ruins

On Sunday, April 30 Sangre de Cristo will go to the migrant trap near
Melrose. Contact is Lonnie Howard at 995-9799 or Gail Szpatura at 471-4496.

On May 6, the Colfax County group will explore the Cimarron area and several
of the private ranches in the area meeting at the historic St. James Hotel
at 7:30 (6:30 for breakfast). Leader is Dave Cleary at 375-2971.

On Saturday, May 6, Central Audubon will go to the Tucumcari area. Leader
is Chris Rustay at 255-7786.

Paul Yoder advises that will nbe a MIGRATION SENSATION at Percha Dam State
Park on April 29-30. Contact him at 744-5998. A self-guided nature trail is
being built.

The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe has nature walks on the grounds
every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. For details call them at 983-4609.
