Tuesday, April 25, 2006. 8:00 pm update. Compiled by Rick Schortinghuis and

YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
Tuesday, April 25
A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, the first for the season for the Victoria
checklist, was seen on Maber Flats just east of Brentwood Bay.
Maber Flats lies between Wallace Drive and Keating's X Rd.
A BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, again the first for the season for
the Victoria checklist, was seen in Deep Cove. A HAMMOND'S
FLYCATCHER, again the first for the year for the checklist, was also
seen in Deep Cove.
3 BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS and a MacGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER were seen
on the power line going south towards Thetis Lake at Francis King
Park.
Another BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER along with 2 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were
seen on Mt Doug.
A RED KNOT was seen on Clover Point with SURFBIRDS, BLACK TURNSTONES,
DUNLIN and 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS.
On Mt Tolmie there was a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE.
There was 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR seen at the Chinese Cemetery.
Monday, April 24
A SAY'S PHOEBE, a VESPER SPARROW, and a female LAPLAND LONGSPUR were
seen at the Chinese Cemetery at Harling Point in Victoria.
A male LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen at Clover Point.
A WESTERN TANAGER and a VAUX'S SWIFT, both firsts for the year,
were seen at Mt Doug.
2 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were seen on Mt Tolmie.
A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was seen at the University Woods at UVIC.
Sunday, April 23
A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was seen on Maber Flats.
Saturday, April 22
A SOLITARY SANDPIPER, the first for the year, and a GREEN HERON were
seen at Somenos Marsh in Duncan.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, the first locally for the year, was seen on
Trial Island off Victoria (note restricted access).
4 MARBLED GODWITS were seen at Clover Point.
Friday, April 21
A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was seen in the backyard at 1545 Eric Rd. near
Mt Doug. It was seen for about 21/2 hrs. in the morning and was
seen again later in the evening. It could also be seen in the park
behind, Bow or Brodick Park.
2 PURPLE MARTINS were seen on Mt Douglas, a male and a female. This is
the first report for the year for the Victoria checklist. Also
there, an AMERICAN KESTREL.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen on Mill Hill.
Thursday, April 20
3 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were seen on Mt Doug.
A REDHEAD was seen on Kings Pond.
Another TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen at Oakhaven Park in Brentwood
Bay. Also there a CASSIN'S VIREO.
Wednesday, April 19
A female MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD and a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE were seen near
the viewing platform at Mt Doug.
At the Chinese Cemetery there were numerous shorebirds including 6
WESTERN SANDPIPERS. Also there was 1 CLIFF SWALLOW, the first
reported for the season for our checklist.
AT Clover Point there was 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER and 1 SEMI-PALMATED
PLOVER, another first for the checklist for the season.
At the Victoria Golf Course there was 1 MARBLED GODWIT and 4
WHIMBREL.
Near Mile 0 in Beacon Hill Park there was a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE
just off the side of the road.
