***MESSAGE FROM EDITORS: “MICHIGAN BIRDS AND NATURAL HISTORY”***
The co-managing editors, Raymond Adams & Allen Chartier, of our state
ornithological journal: “Michigan Birds and Natural History” are actively
seeking a new Editor to take the place of the late Jim Granlund, starting
this fall, with the production of the first 2007 issue. If anyone (or a
team) is interested in taking on the MBNH editorship, or if you know someone
who may be a good candidate, we want to hear from you soon! Please contact
Ray Adams, Adamsknc@aol.com
In KEWEENAW COUNTY, a SMITH’S LONGSPUR* was found during The Manitou Island
Bird Surveys on April 23rd. Unfortunately, the island(s) are apparently only
accessible by seaplane.
In ONTONOGAN COUNTY, the previously reported EURASIAN TREE SPARROW* was last
viewed on April 21st.
In MARQUETTE COUNTY, the previously reported TRICOLORED HERON* was still
present in Harvey as of April 24th. The bird can be observed from behind the
Bayshores Vet Clinic on US-41.
In HURON COUNTY, on the afternoon of April 20th, the previously reported
TUFTED DUCK* was seen at the Sebawing Sewage Ponds, but has not been
relocated.
In ALLEGAN COUNTY on April 21st, a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON* was reported
from a private residence, near Sanctuary Woods Park and not far from Lake
Macatawa. The bird has not been relocated, to my knowledge, since April
21st.
In WAYNE COUNTY, a PILEATED WOODPECKER was located on Belle Isle from April
22nd, through at least April 26th. Prior to this sighting, the last
published record of the species in WAYNE COUNTY was in 1888.
In BERRIEN COUNTY, 2 EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES* remained at the Three Oaks
village park to at least April 26th.
In OTTAWA COUNTY, up to 8 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were reported present on
April 21st and 22nd, at the east end of Lake Macatawa.
In WASHTENAW COUNTY, a CATTLE EGRET was seen on April 20th & 21st, located
near/at the Sugarbush Farms property at Gotfredson Road and Ford Road. The
bird was in the North East corner of this intersection foraging along the
small stream that runs through the cow field. At one point, it was within
100 ft of Gotfredson Road aand about 50 yds from Ford Road. On April 25th, a
SNOWY EGRET was present at the Dexter Mill Pond in downtown Dexter, MI, west
of Ann Arbor.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, May 4th, 2006.
To report your sightings, please leave a message at the sound of the tone,
or call Jon Wuepper at 269-556-9510. Thank you for calling and good birding.
