This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, April 27. Please

An injured LONG-TAILED DUCK was in the Ballona Channel in Playa del Rey on
April 22. A female LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen in the channel on April 24.
Take Culver west to Pacific, then bear right and go to the end and park.
Walk north from here to the channel.

A LEAST BITTERN was reported calling at the lake at Hansen Dam in Sylmar on
April 22. Take the Osbourne exit from the 210 Freeway and then go southwest
to the parking area.

Four SWAINSON’S HAWKS were observed over Sierra Madre on April 21.

Two FRANKLIN’S GULLS were at the Lancaster Sewer Ponds on April 20. The
ponds are on Avenue D, just east of the 14 Freeway. Remember to sign in at
the office before birding the ponds.

A possible female BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was reported from the
Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve on April 23. The bird was about 100 yards
south of the Wildlife Area entrance along the trail east of the stream. The
entrance road is on the east side of Woodley between Victory and Burbank.
The wildlife area entrance is southwest of the parking area and restrooms.

At Eaton Canyon in Pasadena a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was near the equipment
yard northwest of the parking area on April 23. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was
south of the Nature Center on April 20. Also that day, a GRAY FLYCATCHER
was found and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued near the Nature Center.
The entrance to Eaton Canyon is on Altadena Drive just past New York Drive,
north of the 210 Freeway.

GRAY FLYCATCHERS were also at Peck Pit in Arcadia (take Myrtle Ave. south
from the 210 Freeway) and at Sycamore Canyon in Whittier on April 21.

Large numbers of EVENING GROSBEAKS were found at Mount Pinos on April 22.
Up to 150 birds were at several point along the road to Mount Pinos and at
McGill Campground. 100 to 200 birds were reported on April 25 and
"hundreds" were again reported on April 26 with the greatest numbers between
milepost 10 and 12.
